Plan Now for 2020 State and Local Population Growth

Hi Yupette:

Appears that Virginia's population will increase by 1 million by 2020 and Arlington's population will increase by 25,000. We should be planning basic infrastructure growth now, rather than funding extravagant projects. Thanks for this blog.

Tell Zimmerman, Tejada, and Fisette at next month's County Board meeting.

So what happens when the 25,000 population increase translates into 8,000 additional students in the school system by 2020?

They aren't thinking about 8,000 additional students they are thinking about a $300 million trolley system and live theater and soccer in every neighborhood.

They didn't design the new Wakefield HS to handle a student population increase. What makes you think they care about 8,000 more kids attending public schools by 2020?

Last County Board meeting the County Board approved transferring $33 million to the School Board to cover educating 1,000 more kids next year. So multiply $33 million by 7 and you have $231 million. That's the cost of instructing 7,000 more students between 2012 and 2020 in the Arlington School System. Doesn't include construction costs for new classrooms.

Figure another $200 million for new classrooms and new schools.

The new Wakefield HS was designed to as a recreation center with classrooms.

Look what they are doing to our neighborhoods. All they care about is development for the sake of development.

Zimmerman should not only be off the WMATA Board but off the County Board.

Arlington Schools 2020 - Brick and Mortar Admin buildings surrounded by trailer classrooms, surrounded by state-of-the-art athletic fields.

Mary Hynes made the Arlington schools a party zone when her kids were enrolled in Arllington's schools...and she has 5 kids.

Planning for 2020? What planning for 2020? As for the schools, none of their kids will be in the school system in 2020.

Isn't Zimmerman the only CB member with a kid still in the school system?

Safe to say if the County Board keeps running for re-election and keeps getting re-elected their grandkids will be in the Arlington School System in 2020. Attending class in trailer classrooms.

Planning for the future. What planning? Our future is 'planned' by out-of-state developers

My 15 year old is going to law school. Then practicing international commerciallaw. Because her only hope for success in 2020 is suing Chinese corporations.

"Planning"? Check out Zimmerman's megalomaniac subway-bus-trolley "Planning" - at the last County Board meeting.

Dude, you forgot Fisette's plans for an aquatic center in every community.

There is not going to be a big expansion of Metrobus or ART to accommodate the increase in population. The transportation funds will be going to Zimmerman's trolleys. Agenda Item 30, last County Board meeting.

Sixty five million dollars for an aquatics center and another $65 million for a sports arena next door to the aquatics center would build a lot of classrooms.
