Time for County Government to End the Planetarium Charade

Hi Yupette,

Did you read the Local Opinions page in yesterday's Post? The Post rightly went after the Arlington School Board for its anti-knowledge campaign against the Arlington Planetarium. Part of the anti-knowledge campaign directed by the recreation and entertainment fanatics on the County Board and School Board to also defund libraries, nature centers and the like and use the savings to build more recreation and entertainment infrastructure. Who's to blame? Start with Walter Tejada, Jay Fisette, Mary Hynes, Sally Baird, and Abby Raphael. Walter Tejada and Jay Fisette are so anti-knowledge it's frightening. Unless the knowledge involves soccer and bicycles.

Walter Tejada? You mean Senor Futbol?

Fund the planetarium renovation. Enough has been spent on soccer.

County Board thinks nothing of spending $421,000 on bicycles in one neighborhood and $425,000 to renovate one tennis court.

Or, regarding Fisette, the knowledge involves the revival of some Stephen Sondheim drivel at the Signature.

Did Walter Tejada even graduate from high school? This is the guy who sets spending priorities in Arlington?

Time to dump Patrick Murphy as school super...our kids deserve bettef, an educator, not a football coach.

It starts at the top...an Ivy League-educated President who talks about creating future high-tech high paying jobs in the USA when he visits an elementary school, not about his dog.

What can you expect from the First Yuppie?

Something that can benefit all is denied to fill the wants of a few special interest groups. Soccer is great, but enough is enough. I will not vote for Walter Tejada in November.

Next month the County Board will take up the plan to provide lighted athletic fields for Marymount University and Bishop O'Connell High School;.

There has been a big growth in planetary science over the past 15 years. So what gets funded in Arlington? Planet Soccer.

Also blame Barbara Favola for taxpayer funding of soccer fields for use by private schools like Marymount. She's Marymount's Chief Lobbyist and Marymount reportedly pays her more than $100,000 / year.

"Look, If I didn't agree with Coach Pat Murphy that our childrens' future depends on the United States being the world power in team sports in this century, I would not be visiting Arlington's schools."

Regarding President Obama's visit to Arlington last week, this is a guy with two kids in the primary grades and he's clueless about providing children with a future that's better than what we have going in this nation today.

What has 'Nada' Tejada actually accomplished while on the County Board?

Hi, Yupette, Census Bureau will release first data from the 2010 Census today. My estimate - U.S. population grew by 28-32 million between 2000 and 2010. Virginia's population by a million. How about a posting?

I'm disgusted by 'welfare for the wealthy' - started with the Signature Theater and then the Artisphere and now we are funding million dollar lighted synthetic playing fields for private schools from tax revenues.

How about a thread about what "knowledge" one can peruse in the Shirlington and Westover libraries? Appears to me that 90% of what's there is fiction of the drugstore variety, DVDs of films, romance novels, mystery novels, etc.
