Arlington Yupette's Best and Worst of 2010

Based on your many postings to the A.Y. Blog, here are your picks for best and worst in Arlington, and around the region, in 2010:

Worst County Board Member - Chris Zimmerman. He's a total mess and everything he touches turns into an expensive mess.

Runner Up - Jay Fisette. Jay never misses an opportunity to waste scarce dollars on more of his favorite entertainment and recreation projects.

Best County Board Member - Mary Hynes. Keeping your mouth shut and going along with the program has its rewards.

Worst Local Journalism - The Washington Post, for finally coming out and stating what the Post has always been for - resegregation through gentrification - during the Fenty-Gray campaign.

Runner Up - Scott "Conflict of Interest" McCaffrey, Editor of the Arlington Sun Gazette, for never missing an opportunity to boost his fellow Chamber of Commerce Board Members and Realtors.

Best Local Journalism - Tie - Fairfax Times and Alexandria Times - for at least trying to be unbiased.

Worst Legislator - Senator Jim Webb. Why does he still call himself a Democrat?

Worst State Senator - Senator Mary Margaret Whipple. Given her tenure she should have produced much more for Arlington County.

Worst Delegate - Tie - David Englin, Adam Ebbin and Bob Brink. Hey guys you're supposed to serve everyone's interests, not the interests of the special interests.

Best Legislator - Patrick Hope, who is at least dimly aware that he was elected to serve the interests of all his constituents.

Worst Candidate for Public Office- Tie - Chris Zimmerman and Sally Board, who ran on platforms of more-of-the-same failures.

Best Candidate for Public office - Miriam Gennari - for daring to state in a County governed by "community leaders" who worship the status quo and mediocrity: "We can do better for our kids".

Worst County Board Enabler - Mike "Nardozimmy" Nardolilli for selling out his East Falls Church community to Chris Zimmerman's megalomaniac redevelopment schemes.

Best Community Activist - Jim Hurysz - for trying to preserve something resembling a quality of life in Arlington for everyone over the next several decades.

Best Community Organization - Worst Community Organization - No award. They are all seen at budget hearings but not heard from otherwise, except when throwing galas and supporting more of the same.

Worst Community Leader - Arlington Civic Federation President Mike Kerley, for hosting meeting after meeting of "all talk - no action" during 2010.

Best Community Leader - Maureen Ross, President of the Cherrydale Civic Association for telling the County Board to stop delaying long-overdue infrastructure improvements in Cherrydale.

How about Dumbest County Board Member? I nominate Nada Tejada.

EFC homeowner said...

Dumbest County Staffer - CPHD Chief Bob Brosnan for releasing an internal survey of Planning Staff that revealed Planning Staff view County residents as nuisances who get in the way of mega-development.

Smartest County Staffer - former County Manager Mike Brown, who took a $400,000 contract buy out rather than go along with the County Board's fiscal irresponsibility.

Let's Be Free said...

Slipperiest County Staffer – Chief Librarian Diana Kresh who first said the Columbia Pike library branch had to be moved because APS wouldn't include the library in its renovation; who then said the branch had to move because APS had no renovation plan to begin with; and who finally said that the branch had to move because the Board told her so (which every Board Member denied).

Worst Conflict of Interest - Barbara Favola, who is reportedly paid more than $100,000 per yer by Marymount to be Marymount's Chief Lobbyist. Barbara reportedly (by County Staff) spends several hours each week lobbying for Marymount, latest lobbying effort is to make Bishop O'Connell another satellite sports complex for Marymount.

Kresh did nothing but play politics at the Library of Congress.

Worst Political Campaign - Patrick Murray. Even people who don't like Jim Moran ended up voting for him after the Murray Campaign repeatedly went on records as being for everything Progressives and Moderates are against.

Greenest Arlingtonians - the fifty or so Arlington homeowners who have installed on-site renewable energy and have insulated their homes with state-of-the-art insulation, windows, and other measures to drastically cut their homes' energy consumption.

Least Green Arlingtonians - (tie) Arlington Green Party Chair John Reeder who lives in an upscale home indistinguishable from his neighbors and Congressman Jim Moran, whose $10 million "Palace on the Palisades" is so energy inefficient it has a negative LEED score.

Worst Developer / REIT - Vornado Realty Investment Trust - which got the steal of the decade from Arlington County taxpayers for Crystal City redevelopment.

Best Charade by County Government - Barbara Donnellan's ongoing facilitation of S & P to keep Arlington's bond rating AAA. At least this Ponzi scheme saves the taxpayers a few bucks. Who knows for how much longer.

Worst Charade by County Government - the Artisphere. Whatever was promised the reality is the Artisphere is a taxpayer constructed and subsidized party zone for Jay Fisette's pet people and interests.

Best corporation - The thosands of small local businesses who keep Arlington running efficiently.

Worst corporation - Dominion Resources. The only thing not mediocre about this company is manner in which it uses its wealth and power to stifle renewable energy in Virginia.

Worst three Arlington Bureaucrats - Barbara Donnellan, Doug Scott, and Jim Schwartz. They control the lives of all Arlington residents but refuse to live in Arlington County.

Ditto for the County Attorney and Clerk of the County Board.
