Hey Yupette,
I sometimes run in 5K events and joined up to run the Army 10 Miler this past weekend. What a disaster. Runners and some spectators became very dehydrated and race-related injuries ranged from cardiac arrest to many, many, runners and spectators becoming very dehydrated. Ten miles is actually 16 kilometers. Not 5 kilometers. Also, temps this morning were about 80 degrees and about 80 percent humidity.
Not nearly enough hydration available along the race course. Same U.S. Army that's been fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan for about 16 years. Duh. Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, DC, EMS were overwhelmed. Duh.
I finished the race and realized that I wasn't feeling well. Drank down a quart of Gatorade my sister brought along and felt better. Too little hydration for 16 kilometers.
That's what happened. Thanks for your blog.

Not surprised - Hydration was hit-or-miss
People were passing out from dehydration on Metro trains on the way home.
Heard this on my 10 year old Radio Shack scanner. Arlington fire and ems did not (as they usually do) reserve a couple of dedicated radio channels for this event, so yeah, lots of people fell ill from dehydration.
My sister (who's 54 years old) dropped out after about 3 miles or 5K. Too warm and humid.
See if the Sun Gazette and ArlNow publish anything about this.
I question the proliferation of these events. Many street closures and local police-fire-EMS are stressed. Are we going to have one major event every weekend in the future between March 1st and December 1st?
Probably yes, if we continue to have one-party rule in Arlington where incumbents get re-elected through massive patronage and promises to special interests, and the greedy media shill for the same-old same-old.
Greedy Media are a big part of our problem and will become a bigger part of our problem.
Yes. Bikesters are out-of-control on sidewalks ans trails and local media won't print anything about basic bicycle-pedestrian safety lest it offend the bicycle bozos.
Greedy Media are all the same, whether the Post owned by Amazon or a suburban weekly anywhere.
Report appeared on ArlNow this afternoon. Major casualty event.
Would the Army be allowed to expose basic trainees to such heat and humidity at a base in the deep South?
Why are federal, state, and local first responders consistently un-prepared to deal with effects on humans related to weather extremes?
Army should have known better. Event should have been cancelled or reduced in length to 3 miles or 5 kilometers.
How much more can we give the first responders than we've already given them?
I am very concerned about the proliferation of military aircraft flying over Arlington at low altitude for what appear to be not very good reasons.
I am sick and tired of the proliferation of infill, events, activities, everything crammed into this tiny county, typically by non-residents who are County employees and organizations where the event planners are also non-residents. I am not going to shop for a week's worth of groceries on a bicycle. STOP closing a dozen major streets and highways for these events.
Next will be the major league bicycle race where 100 or more riders crash at once.
Where in Florida is Jay Fisette retiring to? Bet a donut it's nowhere like Arlington.
County's so-called emergency preparedness office was completely unprepared for this.
Will things be better or worse with Fisette gone?
I don't see the County's Web site even acknowledging this disaster occurred.
Where are all the military helicopters coming from and going?
High temp in Arlington expected to be 76 degrees Sunday 10/22.
