I'm a former Arlington Civic Federation Delegate (before being replaced by the Yellow Dog Dems who control my civic association - hint, I live in Greater Westover). I was intrigued by the CivFed's October newsletter I received in my e-mail about the CivFed's reorganizational meeting on October 3rd.
So, after first hearing statements from unopposed Yellow Dog Democrats running for re-election the CivFed will turn it's attention to a panel discussion about how the County manages its fund balances and reserves. (Someone could ask the County's financial VIPs why so much tax revenue is parked long-term with a few banks at virtually zero interest). Then CivFed Delegates and Alternates will be advised about proposed modernization of the CivFed's governance. That includes new bylaws to replace the Civfed's current bylaws which date from the CivFed's inception, a hundred years ago.
Also appears the County will pick up the tab for liability insurance for CivFed officers and the CivFed generally. In return for what? CivFed is being advised by the Bean, Kinney law firm, and as anyone who's active in development and redevelopment knows, Bean, Kinney is always on the lookout for site plan approvals from civic associations. Duh.
Anyway, it's all in the CivFed's October newsletter, which should be posted on the CivFed's Web site, www.civfed.org, any day now.
CivFed meeting is tonight at Virginia Hospital Center. Starts at 7 PM.

Bean, Kinney, gave the CivFed a discounted rate for legal representation. Aren't there CivFed VIPs who are attorneys?
CivFed Leadership wants to help County Government, developers, and special interests micro-manage Arlington's neighborhoods without being sued. Hence the push for modern by-laws and liability insurance.
Stay tuned for a CivFed that's more diverse, has many fewer conflicts of interest, and is much more transparent.
Fact of Life: Democratic and Republican activists run the CivFed.
Civic Federation was, is, and always will be an upscale group of elitist busybodies trying to micro-manage everyone else's lives,
"Adam 10, Adam 11, for a complaint from the Arlington Civic Federation meeting at 1635 North George Mason Drive. RP states there is a young Hispanic male who insists he was told he could join the Civic Federation, and he won't leave the meeting."
Don't you love how "community leaders" make promises with the County and Developers on behalf of their neighborhoods without telling their neighbors?
Same old crowd showed up for the CivFed meeting tonight.

Recent County Government expenditures were de facto misappropriation of public funds - Arlington Presbyterian Church giveaway, Phoenix Bikes giveaway, overspending for Lubber Run Community Center, Wilson School, and Fisette Aquatics Center.
And Jay Fisette has 3 County Board meetings left to extravagantly endow his pet special interests with tax dollars
The VIPs at CivFed all spoke about this and that slush fund but no mention of the County's Taj Mahal public infrastructure expenditures.
CivFed is a bunch of middle aged and elderly people from North Arlington, nothing's going to change.
