School Board Lobbies County Board for 2-Cent Tax Rate Hike

 Hey, Yupette,

Coach Patrick Murphy and the Arlington School Board met last night. FY 16 APS budget will be $561.1 million (up from $239.4 million in FY 15)  to educate an estimated 25,620 students next year ($21,900 per student).

The School Board will be at least $13 million short because of the usual add-ons like $8.1 million for step increases and hiring 196 more teachers (Masters Degree and 10 years experience required) and staff . Which will bring the number of full-time APS employes to 4,363, or about 1 full-time APS employee for every 6 students.

What to do? Lobby the County Board for a 2-cent increase in the real estate tax rate, of course! Will be played out at Saturday's County Board meeting provided the meeting isn't cancelled due to snow.

We can expect more of the same until at least FY 20. If you create a school system that's expensive to the point of being extravagant people will want to enroll their kids.

All part of the New Urbanist agenda to pack as many people into Arlington as possible, no matter what the consequences.

That would be on top of the 5% to 7% increase in residential real estate assessments.

How about a reduction in force at APS....like some of the 1000-or-so APS employees who do little or nothing?

What can you expect from a School Board whose members get elected because of Democratic Party politics?

Can't have a RIF at APS. Too many Democrats in no-show jobs would be out-of-work.

Waste in County Governement could fund the operating budgets of two small counties downstate. Waste in APS could fund the school systems in those two counties.

Media are largely to blame. Could have endorsed Audrey Clement who was the best candidate for School Board last year. Instead the media support the status quo, no matter what the future consequences.

I would like to know how much APS is spending on public relations to make the Supe and School Board look good.

APS also wants to buy more school buses and hire more drivers.

How much is the APS junket to San Diego next week going to cost taxpayers?

Fourth Grade Arithmetic:

Dick and Jane are the only students on the school bus. The school bus costs $500 per day to operate.

Mr. Rogers, who owns a fleet of limousines, will pick up and drop off Dick and Jane at school and at home every day for $400. Should Dick and Jane keep riding the school bus?

Bonus question:

For an additional $50 per day Mr. Rogers will have Dick and Jane dropped off and picked up in a 2015 Rolls Royce.

Should Dick and Jane continue riding the school bus to and from school?

Waaaaaa.....Waaaaaa... I don't want Mommy to drive me to school in this stupid Range Rover. I want a limo ride to school in a Rolls Royce, like Dick and Jane.

Yeah, A.Y. is all about Yuppie Arlington...like 2nd generation spoiled brats and 3rd generation spoiled brats.

First generation yups are retired and living at least 100 miles from the nearest vibrant mixed-use redevelopment.

First Generation Yups...you mean like C.Z. and his amigo Nada Tejada?

Betting is the C.B. will increase the tax rate a penny.

Agree...County Board will listen to sob stories from APS faculty, staff, students, parents, etc. and raise the real estate tax rate a penny.

If APS is so great, where are the grants, gifts, philanthropy?

Will be interesting seeing the drama played out about what the tax rate increase will be at the CB meeting tomorrow.

$hit, this blog is a hoot...a lot more fun than reading the propaganda from 2100 Clarendon Blvd. on ArlNow.

Agree...CB will vote to increase the tax rate a penny tomorrow. Hynes and Tejada don't give a s--- anymore and Garvey is running for re-election next year.

School Board wanted 2 cents will receive 1.5 cents.

Coach Murphy and the School Board are laughing all the way to their winter junket in San Diego.
