County Board Spends Little Time on Activities Related to Governance

Hello,

We wondered what County Board members do when they are in their offices at 2100 Clarendon Boulevard. So we investigated. Turns out that they are heavily engaged in politics, self-promotion, making secret deals with developers and special interests, meeting with fellow politicians and with selected 'community leaders', making arrangements to attend functions with political and community supporters, rehearsing County Board and other meetings, and being briefed by and giving orders to County Staff about how to facilitate projects like East Falls Church redevelopment and frustrate citizens who oppose mega-development projects like Crystal City, East Falls Church, and O'Connell-Marymount sports complex.

Even more troubling is how little County Staff care about the Arlington communities whose interests they are suppose to be serving.

Only about 15% of the County Board's time spent outside meetings is related to the actual governance of Arlington County.

Barbara Favola spends a huge amount of time with Libby Garvey working on a joint campaign for Virginia Senate when she isn't lobbying for Marymount.

County Staff has zero concern about Arlington residents. They do as they are told by the County Board and the developers.

As for County Board meetings, they are just the same, they vote to implement the deals they made in secret.

Why do you think they call Arlington's Roving Sister Cities Ambassador 'Nada Tejada'?

Nothing they do at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. benefits us, except when they pass the annual budget which may include a few benefits besides funding the police and fire departments and the schools if you have children.

Know the reason why the County Board raised the tax rate by one cent for FY 2012? So they could have a $5.7 million 'slush fund' to buy votes by giving handouts to their pet special interest groups.

They should be paying rent for using the County Board offices. Also, the non-profits and for-profits should be reimbursing the taxpayers for use of County Staff to promote their agendas.

Correction: Nada Tejada is Arlington's Roving Ambassador for Team Sports and Sister Cities Programs.

How about a posting about their use of County Employees for their political activites?
