Reasonable Bribes 'A Big Reason' for Trader Joes Locating in Arlington

Hello, Ms. Yupette,

I spoke with a super-friendly Trader Joes employee about TJ opening a new store in Clarendon. He told me that the amount of bribes TJ would have to pay to open a new store in DC was "impossible" and the amount of bribes TJ had to pay to Arlington's elected and unelected officials was "quite reasonable, less than a half million." He was also surprised that Arlington agreed to so little on-site parking, given that 25 - 35 TJ employees will be working in the store and only a few will be able to afford to live within Metro corridors. So I guess a half million dollars still goes a long way in Arlington.

I heard that too, from another TJ employee. We are in pretty bad shape if the damn grocery store employees know how much in bribes the gang at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. are taking.

How many more Yuppie condos, apartments, stores, boutiques, restaurants, night clubs, etc., can be packed into the Ballston-Rosslyn corridor? There's something like 20,000 people for every acre of public open space.

Ask Mary "Party's Over Here" Hynes.

If Trader Joes had to pay the 2100 Gang $500,000 in bribes, so what?

$500,000 in bribes is worth it for a new Trader Joes near my home (North Barton Street).

Hi, Yupette, I no longer wonder why you wear that Trader Joes reusable shopping bag.

This stuff has been going on a looong time. Remember the Shirlington Library - Signature Theater fiasco?

"Reasonable Bribes". Sounds just like the County Board and County Manager.

They've became dishonest in so many ways - big ticket items going on the consent agenda, for example.

Agree with anon., this kind of behavior from the County Board started years ago.

I would like to se a thread about how much more density is going to be packed into the Ballston-Rosslyn corridor.

I would like to see a thread about Mary Hynes - who has gone from making Arlington schools party zones to making Arlington's residential neighborhoods party zones.

County Board went easy on TJ. Needs TJ's sales tax revenue to bribe voters with live theaters and all-weather soccer fields.

People, we are in a national social environment where Bristol Palin appears week after week on "Dancing With The Stars". So, what can you expect?

What is 1/2 million dollars to TJ? That's their profit in 1 week from 1 store.

I thought the Signature Theater - Shirlington Library taxpayer rip off set the record for fiscal irresponsibliity. Until I saw the Artisphere deal and the give-away to the Crystal City REITs.
