Shared-Street Light Rail: A Significant Hazard for Bicyclists, Pedestrians

Hi Yupette,

If Arlington County Government wants to build shared-street light rail it should look at the significant safety hazard that would pose to pedestrians and bicylists.

What the trolley folly proponents don't want to talk about is the number of bicycle accidents that occur involving bicyclists and trolley tracks.

There are already 140-150 reported bicycle and pedestrians accidents in Arlington every year.

Zimmerman's motto is: Safety Last

Why don't we talk about Zimmerman's screwed up "planning" for converting the Pike from a residential / commercial boulevard to a high rise canyon full of cookie cutter box buildings and national chain restaurants and retail? Not to mention a 300-400 vehicle parking garage under each building. Zimmerman received his degree in urban planning from the same box of Froot Loops where he received his degree in rail safety.

I lived in Philadelphia and wouldn't ride a bicycle on streets with streetcar tracks. BTW, Philadelphia has been retiring streetcars for more than a decade.

The only safe way to cross streetcar tracks on a bicycle is to dismount and walk your bicycle across the tracks.

Zimmerman only proves that the New Democrats and the Neo Conservatives will each oppose anything that will bring the greatest good to the most people.

With Zimmerman it's pissing away money on trolleys. With the Neo Cons its pissing away money on HOT Lanes. We lose either way.

Another example: New Dems - Ban affordable housing that's truly affordable. Neo Cons - Ban stem cell research.

Want to know what's REALLY dangerous? When someone on a bicycle or skateboard grabs onto the back of a streetcar for a free ride.

Exactly WHAT is being planned for Columbia Pike, anyway? Making the Pike into a huge parking lot with trolley service?

Want to know how badly this urban village idiocy sucks? Try being on South Walter Reed Drive at 5:30 PM behind a woman dressed totally in black on a bicycle who insists on riding 5 mph and taking up the entire right lane when there is an unused bike trail 20 feet away. Thanks, Jay.
