Major Snowstorm Proves - Time for Major Traffic Mitigation

If nothing else, this weekend's major snow storm proves that it's time for major traffic mitigation in Northern Virginia. Your thoughts? A.Y.

Any advance concern by County Government - especially Zimmerman - at the last County Board meeting? I thought not.

This is what we get for having a SOV-based transportation system with public transit that's incapable of functioning when there is more than 6 inches of snow in 24 hours.

Hi from somewhere north of Tampa. I got out of Dodge and am here until January 4th. People, don't spend any time stuck freezing and housebound in Arlington if you can spend the holidays where it's warm.

Zimmerman will blame the Feds for the County's lack of preparedness.

Time for a real metrorail system, not the dangerous and obsolete light subway / rail system we are stuck with.

Yes, the residential parking lots are full and the streets are fully parked, no place to put the snow. Having a transportation "plan" based on more and more vehicles may have been OK 30 years ago, but there are just too many vehicles in one small county today.

You can always ride your bicycle to the convenience store for essentials, thanks to Jay Fisette having developers install bicycle racks in meg-development.

Fortunately people are leaving to spend the holidays elsewhere. Yes, there are too many cars, SUVs, pick up trucks, etc., in Arlington. I don't want to think what it will be like in 10 years.

Want to know how long my car pool (3 in a SUV) took to drive from the 14th Street Bridge to Fairlington tonight? Try 1 hour 15 minutes. Time for mandatory telecommuting 1 day a week.

I would like to see a moratorium on new parking spaces created in Arlington County.

ALL transportation in this region is SOV-based. You have only to park on a turn-off on I-66, I-270, I-395, Rt 50, etc. at 5 PM and watch the vehicles roll by at 5 mph.

Want a SOV-based transportation system? Then plow out the streets so people can drive their SOVs. Also salt the streets when the snow thaws so SOV owners don't crash into parked SOVs.

A hundred years ago the rail lines were extended into the suburbs before the suburbs were constructed. Now that happens 40 years after the suburbs are constructed (e.g., rail to Dulles). Even worse, rail lines are dismantled and converted into bicycle and hiking trails. This is called "smart growth' but is totally stupid.

Speaking of Tampa, yes there are the tourist trolleys in Tampa, but Tampa is also building a real regional transportation system. Check out tbarta.com

Hey Yupette, how about a thread about TBARTA?

Seen anyone riding a bicycle in Northern VA the past week?

Completely off the topic, I would like to nominate "Jim Shulz" to be Arlington's Local Hero of the Year for preventing the Arlington Sun Gazette's parent corporation, American Community Newspapers LLC and ACN LLC's fat cat owners from using the Federal bankruptcy system to rip off ACN's unsecured small business creditors.

Second the motion.

Speaking of the SG, McCaffrey is now complaining about pot holes in the pavement. He endorsed both the cultural center and Jay Fisette. Huge amounts of tax dollars are being used to fund the arts and recreation. More to be spent next year. We really need a new local newspaper in Arlington.

This blog is always interesting. I live in an historic NC county and the same dumb growth is happening here, with "planning" by the developers, auto dealers, and chamber of commerce boosters, including the local media. Only difference is that we don't have the water resources to support any new growth. But we are getting infill and sprawl growth anyway. Oh, and they can't gentrify the minorities out to trailer parks 40 miles away fast enough.

Washington Post is the same or worse than the locals.

We hired a snow plowiung contractor to plow our cul de sac last week. The County was going to get around to it about July 1st.

Dump Zimmerman !!!

McCaffrey will endorse Zimmerman next year. He and his silly newspaper would be history if he didn't support the status quo.
