Fisette's "Green" Buildings Are Big Energy Wasters

Hi Yupette,

I was able to track the County Board's approval process for so-called "green" buildings. In fact, Jay Fisette and the County Board allow developers to amass enough "green" credits that have nothing to do with energy efficiency via the LEED scoring system to "certify" energy in-efficient buildings (some of which are energy pigs) as "green". This has been going on for years. Jay Fisette is as green as one of the piles of coal at the Mirant (pronounced Moran) generating station, just across Four Mile Run, after a snow storm.

The developers are allowed to pick the low hanging fruit, the easy "energy efficiency" credits, like planting drought-resistant plants around the building.

You get 5 LEED credits for "indoor environmental quality" for using materials that don't give off hydrocarbons, except if you don't use low-emitting or no-emitting materials you can get sued by the people who will work and/or live in the building. Of course, whether or not the materials give off hydrocarbons has nothing to do with energy efficiency.

Don't forget the wasted energy and tax dollars County Government expends giving awards to developers of buildings that aren't really energy efficient.

Want to know what a HUGE charade LEED is? If a developer only went after the LEED credits that made the building energy efficient (e.g, renewable energy on-site) the building could not be LEED certified to be energy-efficient.

Fisette says nothing whatever about air quality. My kid's school is 1/4 mile from I-66. Reeder and the Greens have sued VDOT to stop more pollution from I-66.

NONE of the County Board members cares about air quality. They are actually destroying air quality with their development policies.

Yupette, Arlington has an EPA air quality index of 90, same as Los Angeles County outside urban L.A.

What can you expect when the Chamber of Commerce makes all the planning decisions?

Town of Vienna just received a bull$#!+ green award, while downtown Vienna is approaching traffic gridlock.
