Millions Wasted on "Neighborhood Traffic Calming" in Arlington?

According to a recent review by DES, millions of dollars of physical barrier traffic calming (e.g., speed tables) was installed on Arlington streets without first evaluating neighborhood traffic control (speed limit and stop) signs.

DES just came through Fairlington where the County Board's pro-mega infill proponents had speed tables installed after approving the construction of thousands of parking spaces in Shirlington Village. Half the speed limit signs in Fairlington couldn't even be seen. Traffic calming is nothing but an expensive charade that wastes millions. The real purpose of traffic calming is to erect barriers to keep vehicles out of residential neighborhoods.

Traffic calming? Another expensive charade like "the urban village." Seen what happened to the "urban village" in Clarendon? Same will happen on the Pike and then on Lee Highway.

Who's responsible for the waste of tens of millions every year on garbage like traffic calming?? Favola, Fisette, Zimmerman, and Tejada. Also their fellow Republicrats who the CB appoints to the planning, housing, transportation, etc. commissions.

I want to know how much more in-fill can be constructed inside the Beltway before our quality of life goes totally to hell.

Ask the AAA, Virginia Auto Dealer's Association, Northern Virginia Association of Realtors, and the various chambers of commerce in jurisdictions inside the Beltway. Oh, and don't forget the local media which obtain much if not most of their income from auto and real estate ads.

Glenn, ask the idiots who run the USA, where the population growth has been 65 million over the past 20 years, 2 million of that in Virginia.

Don't forget to ask VDOT.

Both political parties are responsible for massive gentrification, outer suburb sprawl, urban infill, and the lack of infrastructure funding.

Fact of life: Virginia's population grows by 100,000 every year.

Dump Fisette in November. More than anyone in Arlington he's responsible for the County's housing-transportation mess and the County's inverted priorities.

County Board and FC City Council are getting ready to wipe out all the small business owners on Lee Highway at the Arlington - FC border.

Yupette, who do I call about the traffic control signs in my neighborhood, which are mostly hidden by foliage?

Call 703-228-3681. Ask for Transportation Engineering and Operations. If you get a recording leave a message and if no one gets back to you call the County Manager's office at 703-228-3120.

Susan, the Fairlington Citizens Association, whose members are basically County Board ward heelers, are circulating malicious rumors about anyone who doesn't go along with the County's more infill / more traffic / more traffic calming program.

Both political parties are responsible for not funding infrastructure that keeps up with Virginia's population growth of 1 million over the past decade.

U.S. Senate just approved $128 billion more for Iraq and Afghanistan. Who said the Senate can't pass legislation?

Time for extended flex time (e.g., work day starts at 11 AM) for federal workers and mandating telecommuting for federal workers who don't have security clearances 1 or 2 days a week. What is all the high speed internet installed for anyway? For realistic video games?

I would be happy to drive into DC at 11:30 AM and drive home at 8:30 PM a couple days a week.

What have the Republicrat Elitist dumb-asses ever done about making life better inside the Beltway? Nothing.

Quality of life inside the Beltway? Arlington County, City of Alexandria, City of Falls Church, and Fairfax County elected officials spend 70% of their time on development and next to no time on quality-of-life issues.

Bob McDonnell would sell everything owned by the Commonwealth to pay for more roads? So then what in 10 years when Virginia's population is 9 million?

Ever notice that Republicans despise public transportation systems? Number 1 on their hate list is AMTRAK.

Both political parties want to drive the middle class out of the yup-scale smart growth inside the Beltway party zones and into affordable sprawl suburbs 50 miles away. Then make the middle class and working class pay $10 one-way to drive to their $30,000 / year smart growth restaurant and boutique jobs.

Bob McDonnell needs to stay in his nightmare suburb near Virginia Beach where every rush hour is bumper to bumper at 75 mph with frightening intervals when you have to hit the brakes to slow down to 20 mph.

Republicans love luxury vehicles and hate public transportation with a passion. They almost killed AMTRAK five years ago.

Zimmerman thinks that more lanes will mean more vehicles on local streets? Well, Zimmerman and the County Board approved the construction of 4,000 new parking spaces in Arlington last year and about 1,200 in Arlington so far this year.

F-ing greedy Neo-Cons and Limo Liberals don't love their luxury vehicles, they worship them.

Speaking of growth, know what the growth industry is in Arlington and Alexandria? Auto dealerships !! The pols love that sales tax revenue from new and used car sales.

Carole said...

What have the "Republicrats" done to improve the quality of life inside the Beltway? Constructed more public infrastructure with big parking lots that's overcrowded the day after it opens.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the pols spend 70% of their time working with developers. Then (like Zimmerman) they attend public forums and blather about the consequences of traffic resulting from development.

Hi Yupette, an individual has filed suit against VDOT re 395 HOT Lanes in Federal District Court, according to today's Alexandria City Council meeting.
