Now's a Good Time to Leave Arlington

Hey, Yupette,

I'm 56 years old and my youngest child graduated from college a couple years ago. Thought I'd be retiring here - live in 22205. But face it, the County isn't being honest about the costs Amazon will impose on Arlington residents, especially on homeowners. Those costs are in addition to the the costs that will be imposed on us from County Government wanting to in-fill and urbanize the entire County, neighborhood-by-neighborhood.

Who wants to live in a neighborhood where most single family homes are 'repurposed' into bed-and-breakfasts, child care for up to 9 children, McMansions renovated into 1-bedroom apartments, and with neighborhood schools at capacity 3 years after another school addition is constructed? Not me.

Consequently, I'm selling my well-preserved larger home on a nice-size lot and leaving Arlington for a community where I won't see my real estate taxes increase every year to reward one-party government's pet constituencies and watch neighborhood streets become gridlocked to the point I won't be able to back out of my driveway.

The last election was a referendum on fiscal and social responsibility in County Government, and it's obvious we're going back to the era of neighborhood parks becoming $1.8 million dog spas and out-of-control pub crawls.

Then there's one-party government that gets worse every year, to the point where public meetings are charades because everything's decided by a handful of VIPs in secret.

Thanks for this blog.

Completely agree. We are married, 27 and 26 years old, renting a 1-bedroom apartment for $1900 / month and there is way too much uncertainty about this County for us to stay here, buy a home, and start a family here. If the Hipsters want the County they can have it.

Why live in phony-boloney Portland-on-the-Potomac when you can live in Portland?

Goodbye Westover Village....Hello Clarendon III. Coming as soon as Clarendon II (Lee Highway mixed-used Millennialization) is rubber stamp approved.

Again, Katie Cristol should move back to vibrant Princeton and spend the next decade removing Woodrow Wilson's name from various places in New Jersey.

Everyone who's 25-30 and stuck living in an apartment in Arlington isn't a Hipster, just as everyone who was stuck in Woodstock NY 50 years ago wasn't a Hippie. Both us and our grandparents were lied to about what to expect. I'm leaving Arlington as soon as I have 2 years experience. What a f****** circus....and that's before Amazon.

When will the County hold a Referendum asking voters and taxpayers whether we want Amazon here?

ArlNow just announced there's going to be express bus service by PTRC on I-66 from downtown Arlington to Haymarket.

VRE should have begun service out to Culpeper in the Rt 29 corridor years ago

Thousands more electric 2-wheel and 3-wheel vehicles in our future. Starting next March.

Take and publish a photo of Wash Blvd in Westover Village at 5:30 PM Monday thru Friday.

I'm buying a well-maintained older home on a nice-size lot in Fairfax County NOT close to Arlington. Plan on home schooling my kid too. Trump conservatives and Clinton progressives could care less about the middle class. The farther I live away from them the better.

Too much uncertainty about what expensive deals the County Board made / will make with non-profits, for-profits, special interests. Residential real estate taxes and assessments will increase every year for the next several years.

I'm the 22205 resident who wrote the above. I don't appreciate being trashed by a low life chamber of commerce booster like Scott McCaffrey in his news blog. Maybe if the Sun Gazette, Amazon Post, ArlNow, Connection etc., posted some accurate information about what the give-aways to Amazon are going to cost homeowners I might stay in Arlington. But local media publishes and editors are wusses and cowards who only care about $$$$$ from shilling for more of the same old, same old.

County Government is all excited about Ballston Quarter but is clueless about how much Amazon employees will spend in Ballston Quarter on upscale junk they can order through Amazon..

County's about to become a Millennial Circus and the LAST place I will ever visit is Ballston Quarter.

Next big thing from Arlington Progressives will be a re-naming frenzy. Forty years of them controlling everyone and everything. Enough already.

Last night the County Board approved another program for another special interest group - child and adolescent psychiatric services - although about 20% of the County's tax revenue already goes to provide various types social and human services. More than obvious that the County will be unaffordable for the upper middle class within 5 years. Amazon employees will demand and receive too many expensive services which will negate whatever revenue the County receives from Amazon.

I'm waiting until Spring to decide whether to move or stay -- when it becomes obvious what the Democrats promised Arlington's Millennials to get them to vote the Democratic sample ballot. I am NOT going to live in a county where thousands of electric vehicles clog the streets and sidewalks.

Can someone determine the extent Amazon employees will shop local retail?

I'm waiting until next June to decide whether to leave or stay. Depends on whether or not the County's going to be completely Millennialized, aka Portland-on-the-Potomac. Anyone who is not a Millennial is already a nuisance to Katie Cristol and Christian Dorsey.

Amazon's MOU with the State and County allows for pervasive secrecy. Amazon Post is a joke as are all the other local media outlets.....nothing but shills for the status quo. Why be a prisoner of done-deal one-party government with no accountability to anyone?
