Bikeshare - More Arlington County Board Corporate Welfare

Hey Yupette,

First, thanks for this blog. Much appreciated by this former Democrat and current Independent.

I was almost hit twice by Capital Bikeshare riders while walking on the sidewalk in Virginia Square, where I live. Visited Capital Bikeshare's Web site twice to ask when Bikeshare was going to do something about the reckless behavior of its customers. Never received any response.

So I perused Capital Bikeshare's Web site again to so try to determine who's in charge at Capital Bikeshare. First thing I found is that Capital Bikeshare is no longer owned by Alta in Portland. Capital Bikeshare and other metropolitan bicycle rental companies are owned by a company named Motivate International, headquartered in New York City. This company is run by a former head of New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Then I found an informative feature on the Fast Company Web site. Turns out Motivate International is owned by a corporate entity named Related Companies, a huge real estate developer. Who owns Related Companies? A mega billionaire named Stephen M. Ross.

Here's the link to the Fast Company Web page:

https://www.fastcompany.com/3055168/love-citi-bike-you-have-a-real-estate-developer-to-thank/

So I have to ask, why doesn't Motivate International provide helmets, safety vests, and riding classes to its customers? And why is the County Board always voting to subsidize this wealthy, wealthy company, which has very deep pockets?

Maybe someone can ask the County Board at it's next meeting.

Not surprising. County Board is negotiating a deal to buy the Rockefeller Family's so-called 'public television' station's antiquated studios for $15 million to be bulldozed into a $2 million soccer field.

What happens when local media are shills for local government and the local chamber of commerce. Read the D.C. City Paper lately?

Has Arlington County bothered to determine what its litigation exposure would be in the event of accidents caused by reckless behavior by Bikeshare Bozos?

I read the attached Fast Company feature. Looks as though the intent of people who control the bikeshare companies in various metro areas, like NYC, is to replace the workforce in places like Brooklyn with urban hipsters.

Once there's a crash-a-day involving Bikeshare riders and pedestrians the County will have plenty of litigation exposure.

Apparently no one in either County Government or the Bikeshare chain-of-command is worried about personal injury liability.

County is building Parks and Rec infrastructure for the region and no one is worried about Bikeshare riders hitting pedestrians. How many sports injuries are there already at public facilities?

And how much do sports / recreation injuries suffered a public facilities already cost Arlington taxpayers?

Bike$hare, et.al. What a bunch of cheap, greedy, $leazy $#!+$. Won't even set up a helmet locker on Bikeshare rental sites where Bikeshare renters can buy a helmet for another $10.

Where are the ID numbers stenciled on Capital Bikeshare frames so we could at least identify the bozos who hit us?

I had a couple close calls with Bikesahre riders. Best thing to do if you're hit (especially if you're hit from behind) is retain an personal injury attorney whose office is in Fairfax County or Alexandria not an Arlington attorney who's part of the problem.

Betting here at 2100 is the Rockefellers get $20 million from the County for the old studios and a gimme so they can Taj Mahal WETA's headquarters on S. 31st St.

Agree that Bikeshare is another element of what's called "resegregation through gentrification" by urban sociologists.

If you're hit from behind by a bikeshare rider you should definitely hire a personal injury attorney.

County Government holds meetings about everything else, where are the bicycle safety meetings?

Worst are the local media, followed by the police, and then the pols. Same wonderful people who allowed Clarendon to become a zoo, then inflicted some version of Clarendon on every other older neighborhood in the County.

I often visit this blog. My daughter is 20 and going to start her junior year in college, a different college from the university she entered as a freshman which is an educational disaster. She's already concerned about the future.

What can you expect? County's population is 230,000, with 30,000 #MeToo wymyn, 30,000 guys with PTSD, and 30,000 LGBTQs who treat their sexual identity like a religion.

Agree. The rest of us put up with the likes of bikeshare. Anyone who doesn't go along with the program are considered nuisances, although typically 30,000 of us vote for independents every year.

ACPD cites tens of thousands of motor vehicle drivers every year for traffic ordinance infractions so its not as though they don't have the resources to cite reckless bicyclists.
