APS 'Ashlawns' Abingdon School Neighbors

Hello, Yupette,

I and my neighbors have nothing against Abingdon School being renovated and expanded. That should have happened 15 years ago. We do have major league issues with our neighborhoods being gridlocked so parents, teachers, staff, and construction workers can access Abingdon School while the school is under construction.

Last September 21st Libby Garvey and the County Board debated Abingdon School's use permit conditions at length. Whatever Libby Garvey may have promised a year ago insofar as APS listening to community concerns, fact is that APS's construction contractors almost immediately gridlocked South 29th Street with traffic and on-street parking at the commencement of construction.

Abingdon's School's immediate neighbors aren't only concerned that we will be gridlocked from our getting to work. We and Abingdon School students will likely be completely gridlocked in once school starts on September 6th.

So far all APS seems to care about is how many parent SUVs can be squeezed into our neighborhood once school starts. I wondered why our neighborhood hired its own land use, planning, and zoning attorney, why our neighborhood invited John Vihstadt to attend neighborhood meetings, why our neighborhood is so hostile to Fairlington's civic association 'facilitating' anything and everything APS does or plans to do. So now I know.

BTW, Nanny Newsies Scott McCaffrey and Scott Brodbeck live in our neighborhood but are never seen here. Neither is Libby Garvey except when there's an election.

So, I guess like the Ashlawn School neighbors we have to look forward to 18 months or more of having to go to the County Board to make APS adhere to the use permit condidtions APS agreed to last year.

Thanks for this blog.

Libby Garvey only cares about facilitating the wants of special interests and buying votes with expensive projects and programs paid for by taxpayers.

Abingson School renovation and expansion has more Project Managers than Carter has peanuts. Time for several employed by APS Facilities and Operations to make a career change.

Retire Libby. Whatever she may say she votes to overwhelm our neighborhoods with more density and vehicles.

APS was all apologies for Ashlawn a year ago. APS just got slammed in a letter to APS and County Planning by nearby neighbors for violating use permit conditions.

Lyin' Libby and the rest of the Republicrats are holding off on the next big wave of urbanization (e.g., announcement of the Potomac Yards Convention Center) until after November.

Whatever they say, they vote for the opposite, un-walkable neighborhoods, more car diet, unaffordable housing.

I gotta laugh about LGBT lobbyist Mark Levine and Chamber of Commerce booster Scott McCaffrey becoming embroiled in renaming Jefferson Davis Highway. Fairlington area is becoming a traffic mess and Levine and McCaffrey, who live in the neighborhood, drivel on about trivia.

Planning Commission agenda for next month's meeting was just put on-line and there are no site plans. PC will vote on an update of the form based code for the Pike and update of the sign ordinance.

Unbiased media? Scott McCaffrey was just 'compensated' for supporting the stupid and unnecessary car tax decal by being awarded a low-number car tax decal.

Does Scott Brodbeck actually live in Fairlington? Or does he use a Fairlington address as a mail drop?

You would think McCaffrey and Brodbeck could start a campaign for traffic, bicycle, and pedestrian safety, since running stop signs has become a big problem in Fairlington.

Abingdon School neighbors should consider taking an early Fall vacation, starting September 6th.

Second the motion for Libby to retire. Move that Jay Fisette announces his retirement next year.

Where I grew up in Ohio the county's 500 watt AM radio station and the county's local newspaper with maybe 5,000 subscribers contributed more to the quality of life in that county than all the media and the PR from Arlington County government combined do presently.

How many who produce Smart Growth propaganda at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. even live in Arlington? Not many.

I decided to do a personal BDS on ArlNow and Inside Nova a few weeks ago after the Inside Nova screen freezes became intolerable and the comments on ArlNow reached the point where the people who post comments were automatically trashing anyone who disagrees with how vibrant smart growth has become.

Another Monday. Another episode of 'Beat the Press' on AY.

LOL. They fucking deserve it.

I heard from two sources that Scott Brodbeck only lives in Arlington during the week.

Would not surprise me, weekends ArlNow is Smart Growth booster op eds and informercials

Why the media angst over renaming Jeff Davis Highway? Because the Arlington County Democratic Party's offices are located on Jeff Davis Highway.

In the event you missed it, the AY blog is by and for Independents.

Scott Brodbeck has a bunch of Smart Growth promoters and commentators available to trash anyone via ArlNow who doesn't go along with Arlington County's Smart Growth Program that's enriching them and Scott.

From a purely analytical viewpoint, AY is one of the best news blogs in our region. Thanks, Cindy. Don't let the Jive Turkey blogs make you unhappy. You're #1 with Arlington Independents.

What happens to the neighborhood around the school after the first week of school, when the cops will no longer be directing traffic?

Arlington is like Cuba and China. One party rule for decades, with predictable results

Agree. Allegiance to the Arlington Democratic Party has completely overcome common sense.

Abingdon School neighbors contacted the police and fire marshall's office...were told 'don't worry be happy'.

Anyone see what's appearing as comments on ArlNow lately? I as banned from ArlNow several months ago for trying to post a comment asking why APS is purchasing more school buses when the ones APS already operates are grossly underused.

Scott Brodbeck bans anyone from ArlNow who's seen as a threat to the revenue stream Scott receives as a Smart Growth booster, e.g. from infomercials, real estate ads, etc.

ArlNow Incorporated doesn't get it - Independents migrated to Arlington Yupette after we were banned from ArlNow for not going along with the ArlNow - ACDC - Arlington Chamber of Commerce Program.

Goodbye to Arl Now -- bunch of creeps, read the comments that Scott Brodbeck allows to be posted.

So, Scott Brodbeck lives in the Abingdon School neighborhood. Is he concerned that he's going to be blocked from leaving his parking lot by SUV soccer parents (some commuting with their kids from their real homes in DC, Fairfax, and PW)?

I am concerned about what happens after the first week of school when the cops aren't around. Like when parents revert to their usual behavior - speeding, running stop signs, driving while texting.

Streets around the school were a traffic mees before the police arrived about 7:20 AM.

Someone saw Scott Brodbeck taking photos after the cops arrived.

Streets were clear this morning while this Fairlingtonian was dropping off her child (for a bus to a different school.) I know that this doesn't fit your agenda, but it's the truth.

Abingdon neighbors repestedly contacted APS, fire marshall, and police starting weeks ago. They did not want to be blocked into their homes and parking lots, as in previous years. Libby was non-responsive, as usual. Only time she's seen in Fairlington is on Election Day. Libby enjoys shopping in Dumb Growth Alexandria before and after inflicting more Smart Growth on Arlington

Abingdon ES has been here since the early 1950's, most of the people complaining here bought their homes after that...maybe they should have considered the ramifications of living across from an elementary school before purchasing their home. Now all of a sudden it is the school's fault and APS fault for being here. Where is the logic?

Parents drive from everywhere to drop their kids off and pick them up at Abingdon. Typically run stops signs, some talk on cell phones while driving. School buses carry few students. Libby Garvey, County Board, and School Board can't do enough for SUV soccer parents. Car free diet is a huge charade when it comes to parents and schools. Millions are being spent on larger school drop off areas and parking lots, and not just at Abingdon.
