When Will My Crumbling Street Be Repaved?

Hello, Yupette,

Spring arrives in Arlington. One drives around the County dodging potholes and broken pavement. It's worse if you ride a bicycle. When will my crumbling street be repaved?

Maybe this year. The County Board just approved $11.5 million for milling and repaving the worst streets, roads, and trails, those that were allowed to deteriorate to the point where they couldn't be repaired by slurry coating (Consent Agenda Item 13 on March 12th).

Two constructuon companies will do the repaving, Finley in North Arlington and Ft. Meyer in South Arlington.

The bad news is the amount of repaving that can be done for $11.5 million depends on the width of the streets that need repaving. And wide streets like Wilson Boulevard and Washington Boulevard need repaving.

It's also disconcerting to see where the funds for CY 2016 repaving will come from. About $6.4 million will come from a 2014 bond referendum, about $3.8 million will come from carried-over pay-as-you-go funds from FY 15 and FY 16, and about $2.1 million from the yet-to-be-approved FY 17 budget. Which leads me to wonder whether the County's bond rating firms know about the fiscal shenanigans that are being played so the County can maintain its AAA bond rating.

Oh, County also had an item on the March 12th Consent Agenda for a new parking deck for County employees who work at and out-of the Trades Center. About $6.6 million for 155 parking spaces. Do the math.

Thanks for your blog.

What New Urbanism does to everything in Arlington - allows everything to deteriorate to the point where everything has to be torn-up or torn-down and replaced.

Didn't the County Board Chair hit a big pot hole while riding her bicycle a couple years ago and was incapacitated with broken bones for several months?

How did the New Urbanists who inflict their Smart Growth ideology on everybody and everythng in Arlington ever allow the guy who owns The Italian Store in Westover to completely renovate the old 7-11 convenience store?

Anyone know how much the County would have saved if streets were routinely slurry coated rather than allowed to deteriorate to the point where they have to be milled and repaved?

Westover is populated by grown-up adults with young kids, not by idiot millennials.

New Urbanists are a bunch of f---ing Urban Vultures and our suburban neighborhoods are future road-kill.

Victor Hoskins deliberately lets roads deteriorate in order to coerce citizens to give up their cars and triple their commute times with ART Bus.

Really good impression Victor Hoskins and AED are making on corporations that might want to relocate to Arlington -- crumbling streets and sidewalks plus vibrant used car lots.

Victor should go back to Baltimore and help Johns Hopkins and Baltimore City Government gentrify out the 'undesirables' there, for a change.

Car Free Diet? Another Smart Growth oxymoron / charade. County and APS just agreed to lease parking spaces at Westover Baptist Church for APS teachers and staff who work ar Swanson Middle School. Plenty of free parking is a huge fringe benefit for non-resident County and APS employees, paid for by residents who are told to ride bicycles.

Didn't Arlington voters approve more than $70 million in a bond referendum 18 months ago for street paving?

I am 65 years old and a Georgetown University graduate. Why is Arlington repilicating the mess Georgetown became 40 years ago?

Victor Hoskins and AED are Urban Village Idiots. They inflict "Complete Streets" on Arlington's "Vibrant" residential neighborhoods while allowing the streets to crumble. How "Smart" is that?

Victor is a Hillary kind of Guy. It's all about Him...Him...Him.

Where is the Bicycle Cult when it comes to repaving streets, roads, and trails?

Victor will leave Arlington in the not-too-distant-future to work in a jurisdiction that isn't tapped out from Smart Growth.

When Jay hits a pot hole like Libby did.

Reality is the County Board has been buying the votes of special interest groups with tax dollars for a long time. But it's reached the point where the special interest groups are non-resident County employees who don't vote here.

How many Cuban economic refugees will be resettled in Arlington over the next couple of years? How many Syrian refugees? Is that information even available? Don't we deserve to have some idea of how much more public education is going to cost us?

FYI, County employees who promote bicycling and "car free diet" not only don't live in Arlington but drive to work one-per-vehicle.

Consent agenda for the April 16th County Board meeting should be on-line by 5 PM on April 8th.

Arlington is a de facto oligarchy. It's not in the economic interests of anyone connected in any way to the oligarchs to speak out against the social, economic, political excesses.

Two words will define Arlington by 2021 - Expensive Mess.

Counnty is trying to get the worst of the crumbling streets repaved before APS takes 55% or more of the County's tax revenue every year.

Arlington Democrats are creating an adjunct of the police force that will report to the county board and function as a political police force.

Arlington is already a de facto police state. Adherence to the agenda of the Plutocracy is enforced by the CivFed, civic associations, advisory commissions, ACDC ward heelers, 9-11-2001 re-enactors (aka CERTS), Smart Growth America, and non-resident County Staff who won't move to Arlignton no matter how much they are paid.

Talk outside the School Board meeting tonight -- Increase in the number of students enrolled in APS next school year will be outta sight.

Want to reduce the number of students attending Arlington public schools by 600 next year? Arrest a few of the County employees who are allowed to send their kids to Arlington schools for years after they move out of the County.

Anonymous said...

Can't do that, they would squeal on ACDC and the APS Administration.

People --- at least 1,000 Cuban economic refugee and Syrian political refugee families FAMILIES will be resettled in Arlington over the next year.

County Government: Your crumbling street can't be repaved because we're playing 3-Card Monte with the bond funds that are supposed to be used for street repaving.

Arrest scofflaw County employees who move away and keep their kids enrolled in County's public schools? Instead, the County Board is giving County employees the power to have you arrested if you ask the County Board an embarrassing question at a public meeting. Item 42 on the April 16th County Board meeting Consent Agenda.

Right...it's an "adjunct to the police force".

Should't those Arl Cty employees be on the "Arlington Car Free Diet" and taking the Metro?

It's May 14th, no repaving in sight for my "vibrant" Ballston neighborhood.
