Planning Commission Votes to Protect McKinley School Trees

Hey, Yupette,

Arlington Planning Commission met last night and approval of the plans for McKinley School renovation and expansion were the first item on the agenda.

To the surprise of most in attendance the Planning Commission voted to protect a number of mature trees on-site rather than increase parking by 20 spaces.

Did not help the cause of APS and County planning staff when staffers revealed that public transit in the neighborhood is underutilized.

The Planning Commission also grilled APS's Director of Design and Construction, Scott Prisco, about the lack of capability to add floors to the school vertically (build up, not out). Since APS's Facilities and Operations Staff don't like modular construction, designing school buildings where classrooms can be added vertically within a few months is too expensive using conventional construction methods.

County Board will take up the McKinley School expansion and renovation on September 20th.

Tell me again why APS is hiring boutique architectural firms to design box school buildings.

No way will I put my child on a stinking school bus when I can drive her safely to and from her elementary school as a passenger on our family's brand new Don Beyer Volvo SUV.

Don Beyer said it...I believe it...that settles it...a Don Beyer Land Rover is the safest and best means of transporting our children to and from school.

F*** the tree huggers. If you don't like me driving my Don Beyer 2015 Volvo SC60 SUV to drop my kids off at school...stay off the sidewalk.

I will never put my precious child on a stinking diesel powered school bus when I can deliver her to school in comfort in my Volvo S60 purchased from Don Beyer Volvo.

I bought a Ranger Rover from Don Beyer in Alexandria because it's by far the best way of transporting kids to and from school.

Waaaaa...Waaaaa...I want to drive Little Buffy to school. Don't make me put her on a school bus.

Yes, why is APS spending mega bucks to hire architectural forms that design Lego buildings?

It's the right of parents to transport our kids to school as we see fit. Don't like it? Too bad.

The architecturel firm that was chosen to design McKinley (yes, it's Lego block architecture) has also been selected (by whom?) to design the Abingdon School renovation and expansion.

Where's the cost / benefit analysis between modular design and conventional design for Lego block Modernist schools?

Reality check - upscale parents don't want to put their kids on a bus that takes 30-40 minutes to travel to school. A much better experience to drive your kid in a Ranger Rover with leather seats.

Has anyone else noticed that women who live inside the Beltway are a bunch of sexists and elitists?

No way, no Howze will I put my kid on a school bus. We vote for upscale Democrats like Mark, Don, Jay, Abby, and so on, for a reason.

How about Lexus Soccer Moms? Do we count?

Why should my kid either freeze or wilt waiting for a stinking school bus full of the children of our third world economic refugee domestic servants when my kids can be driven to school by me in my 2014 Range Rover with heated seats in winter and tropics-tested a/c in the summer?

Thank you Congressman Beyer for making drive-kids-to-school-in-comfort possible.

What are Don Breyer Land Rovers for, anyway?

Anonymous said...

Senator Gillbrand is correct...Arlington is a soulless place run by yuppies for yuppies.

Abingdon is the next school where parking lots will be enlarged so the Yupsters can drive their kids to school.

No Way Howze' will I put my kid on a school bus. I didn't buy a Don Beyer Volvo SUV so I could wait on a street corner for a stinking diesel school bus to show up to pick up my kid.
