Several Arlington residents who contribute to this blog attended the Arlington Civic Federation's annual Candidate Forum last night. Their consensus reports - Independent Candidate for School Board Audrey Clement and Independent Candidate for County Board John Vihstadt decisively defeated their Democratic opponents for County Board and School Board.
First to Audrey Clement - While her Democratic opponents Barbara Kanninen and Nancy Van Doren mouthed platitudes and promises Dr. Clement has a clear plan for improving the quality of education for Arlington K-12 students at less cost to taxpayers,
Rather than spending hundreds of millions building more Taj Mahal Post Modern schools advocated by APS's VIP architects Dr. Clement advocates adaptive re-use of office buildings and construction of modular classrooms, as Alexandria Public Schools have been doing for several years, at substantial savings to taxpayers, with the same or better quality of classroom education provided to students.
John Vihstadt kept his promises to make Arlington Government more efficient and less costly to taxpayers. Mr. Vihstadt's opponent, Alan Howze, wants to gold plate the Pike streetcar but wouldn't, or couldn't, provide estimates of how much that would cost. Mr. Howze also misstated that Mr. Vihstadt voted against Arlington's 10 year CIP when in fact Mr. Vihstadt voted for the CIP, minus funding for the Pike streetcar. It became obvious that, if elected, Alan Howze, will take Arlington Government back to the tax-borrow-spend Zimmerman era.
No contest. Anyone who's rational about County Government and APS viewed Audrey Clement and John Vihstadt as the decisive winners of their respective candidate forums.

Latest from ACDC....YDs have promised the Urban Yupsters that Alan Howze will de-regulate the pub crawls if he's elected.
Kanninen and Van Doren have to run everything they do and say during their campaigns past an ACDC educational caucus first.
How irrational can you get? Bad enough Alan Howze wants to build the Pike streetcar no matter what the cost...then he gold plates the streetcar system without any estimate about what that might cost.
Why can't ACDC's corporate cronies fund Arlington schools concomitant with site plans? Arlington Chamber of Commerce won't allow it?
Scott McCaffrey has made millions over the past decade promoting the ACDC-Arlington Chamber of Commerce status quo.
What McCaffrey made over the past decade by promoting New Urbanism is chump change compared to Jay Fisette and his domestic partner / spouse made during the same time.
Bottom line --- ACDC is scared $#!+less that Arlington Government employees are going to blow the whistle on various taxpayer scams and schemes inflicted on us sheeple over the past 30 years by ACDC.
Yeah...Vihstadt is to blame for lowering the boom on ACDC's criminal enterprises....Right
No, Theo Stamos is scared shitless that she's going to be indicted by a federal grand jury for allowing ACDC's various criminal enterprises to grow and prosper while she's been Commonwealth's Attorney.
Arlington School Board? You mean the Board of Sports, Recreation, and Socialization? Coach Patrick Murphy Superintendent.
Unlike Scott McCaffrey, who cuts and pastes every press release APS hands him, Audrey Clement does her homework.
Vihstadt did everything he promised...more to come. Howze is promising to spend even more extravagantly on the stupid streetcar.
APS has become like the County Government, spends millions promoting itself and applying for awards when in fact the disparity between the scholastic performance of APS minority students compared to minority students across the state is growing.
ACDC criminal enterprises? Start with ACDC allowing Dems to keep their kids in Arlington schools when they move out of the County.
No Howze am I going to vote for another Democrat for County board or School Board.
Appoint Clement to the School Board to finish out Sally Baird's term.
How did we get to the point where School Board members and candidates spend more time on Democratic policies and politics than on education?

ACDC Senior Ward Heeler Carrie Johnson will facilitate the decision already made in a closed meeting by the Arlington Democratic Committee to build a new elementary school on the TJ site with 'plenty of free parking'.

What's tonight's School Board meeting about? Setting us a series of so-called community meetings facilitated by ACDC Committee members to beat down community opposition to a Taj Mahal elementary school on open space at TJ Middle School.
Stop New Urbanism. All New Urbanism is doing is crowding more people into an already crowded county, at tremendous cost to taxpayers, to benefit a few hundred wealthy people who don't live here.

Audrey Clement - I've researched what neighboring school districts are doing and we can get good school buildings for a lot less money.
Barbara Kanninen - Nancy Van Dorn is a good person and deserves to be on the School Board.
