Press release from the County Manager's Office is on-line regarding the Pike streetcar funding decision. As discussed during a recent CIP work session County will forego federal funding and instead the Commonwealth of Virginia will provide up to $65 million to Arlington and Fairfax County ($52 and $13 million respectively) for the Pike streetcar. The latest estimated cost of the Pike streetcar is $333 million.
Arlington County Manager Barbara Donnellan expects the remainder of the Pike streetcar's cost will be funded through a combination of new regional transportation funding and local dedicated real estate tax revenue.
Arlington transportation officials expect that foregoing federal funding will shave at least a year off the Pike streetcar's construction time.

How did the cost get reduced from $358 million to $333 million - a $25 million reduction?
How many accidents would streetcars and streetcar tracks cause and who pays for the accidents?
So Arlington pays $330 million minus the $30 million Fairfax will pay minus the $52 million Arlington will receive from the Commonwealth which amounts to $248 million?
Where does the County Board get the $50 million to pay the School Board because the School Board needs $500 million during the next 3 fiscal years for new construction and can only borrow $450 million?
Maybe they will raid the $600,000,000 secret stash Frank O'Leary and Carla de Pava squirreled away.
What happens if they skip the comprehensive environmental study the feds require in order to obtain a grant from the Federal Transit Administration?

How much has this cost the taxpayers already....and how many state-of-the-art BRT vehicles could Arlington have purchased for what's been spent?
Last week I apoke with a visitor from Aachen, Germany, Arlington's sister city. Aachen residents voted 2-1 against streetcars in a referendum last year. Aachen has a modern fleet of city buses and single and double articulated buses. Check it out on the Web.
Does mean no comprehensive environmental study, or any kind of environmental study?
Post Metro Section article today states that "officials said they will postpone some capital projects and request additional transportation funds to make up the rest".
So what capital projects get postponed?
New ART bus routes?
Postponed? Meaning deferred? Like deferred street paving to pay for million dollar bus shelters?
Where are the data about the projected number of accidents that would occur involving streetcar tracks and 2-wheeled vehicles?
