Hello,
On June 4, 2012 this blog ran a feature about vehicles being burned and explosives being set off during 'training' exercises by the Arlington Fire Department near the old Arlington Fire Academy, in the Arlington Arlington Trades Center, 200 feet from Abingdon Elementary School and close to several residential neighborhoods.
Rather than re-locate the Fire Training Academy to a site where toxic smoke from vehicle fires would pose no threat to human health the Fire Department was allowed to build a new and improved fire training academy on the same site. At the same time a new fire training academy was being planned and constructed Arlington County spent $8 million planning and building a multi-jurisdiction firearms training facility at Dulles Airport.
The Arlington Fire Department has refused to provide information about what hazardous materials will be stored and burned at the new fire training academy - due to be dedicated on Saturday. Based upon what we've been told by 'County Staff' we can expect to hear more loud explosions and smell more toxic smoke from burning vehicles in the near future. However, if enough parents call the County Board offices at 703-228-3130 we may at least be informed about what hazardous and toxic materials will be stored and burned.

Another reason to Dump the Democrats.
Cindy, about 5% of the people employed by the Arlington Fire Department live in Arlington. What can you expect?
Cindy, you have to understand the people responsible for this kind of behavior don't live in Arlington, don't have family members who live in Arlington, and are a couple years from retirement.
FYI, the County Board wants to gentrify out the minorities who presently live in Park Shirlington Apartments (on S 31st Street adjacent to the Trades Center) and redevelop the site with luxury apartments at triple the density.
Hey, A,Y., the County's Minister of Propaganda, Diana Sun, just put out a press release stating the dedication ceremony for the Fire Academy will be rescheduled to February 1st.
Dump all Democrats from County Government. John Vihstadt for County Board.
I want to see a COMPLETE list of ALL toxic and hazardous materials that will be stored, burned, and exploded on or near the new Fire Academy.
Diana Sun doesn't live in Arlington.
I visited your blog's feature about burning vehicles and setting off explosives 200 feet from an elementary school from two years ago. Now your County's Fire Department wants to burn even more vehicles and set off more explosives in the same location? Your County Government is a G-D nightmare, if you don't know it by now. Where are the EPA, OSHA, and FBI? Preparing for the next photo-op when Obama next visits Arlington?
Yupette, $ara$ota $cott McCaffrey lives about 1/4 mile away from the site near the Fire Academy where cars were burned and explosives set off.
If you call the County Board offices to discuss this please be aware that few of the staff who work there are residents of Arlington County.
The County refused to provide bid information for the new Aquatics Center until it was pointed out that providing bid information to the public is mandated by law in Virginia. What makes you think the Fire Department will provide any information about the toxic substances to be burned at its new fire training academy?
Let's face reality - Arlington County is being run and ruined by a gang of outlaws, and the media are either accomplices or deliberately ignore what's been occurring for over a decade.
I would just call OSHA and the EPA. If you call the County Board Offices you just get placed on the list of 'neighborhood nuisances' which is shared with the Democratic Party.
You know, they don't even care about their own employees who work 100 feet away, never mind the elementary school.
Same County Government that doesn't want people to smoke in public parks?
I am calling OSHA and the EPA about this.
This isn't just about Fairlington. The toxic smoke can drift to Shirlington, Nauck, Park Fairfax (in Alexandria) and elsewhere in South Arlington and Alexandria.
This will be a NFPA 1403 compliant burn facility (building). Wood pallets and excelsior will be used to start small fires in the building. Why not show up at the open house and listen to the knowledge of the staff. I am one of those that doesn't live here but I care deeply about your community and the people I serve. I have dedicated my life to helping you. Fact is most Fire Fighters couldn't afford to live in your community unless you stacked us like cord wood in a one bedroom apartment. We train under real conditions to better take care of you in your time of need. The explosions were related to terrorism training and were detonation cord used to simulate conditions providing no risk to residents outside of a small annoyance of noise. Nothing I say will make you feel better so I will end it here. Just know that you are protected by a world class group of men and women. It doesn't matter where we come from we are in fact a huge part of your community. Have a nice day.
Sorry, Chief, we can't believe or trust a Fire Department that burned who-knows-what at the old Fire Academy and exploded who-knows-what...repeatedly...200 feet from our kids' school.
I am furious about that. Chief Shawartz and the entire ACFD have the common sense of a class of probies at the Firebug Fire Academy in Dumbass VA, where you all SHOULD have relocated the Arlington Firebug Fire Academy, where it wouldn't bother anyone.
I want to LOCK CHIEF SHWARTZ UP with the f-ing other probie firebug and first responder 911 re-enactors who are wishing and hoping for more terrorist attacks so they can go on being firebugs at the so-called 'fire academy'.
These f-ing a-holes never bothered to tell the residents in and around the Trades Center what they were doing...poisoning us by setting off explosives and burning junk vehicles and who knows what else.
US believe YOU? No f-ing way, Chief.
Chief Swartz, Chief Scott, the Deputy Fire Chiefs, Police Commanders, and so on, can well afford to live in Arlington, but choose not to.
CORD FOR BOARD !!
Keep calling the County Board at 703-228-3130 and telling then we don't want junk cars burned at the Trades Center.
Jim Shwartz for Arlington First Firebug.
My goodness it appears y'all need a good hug. So much anger. Peace Love and Vegetables
I live close to Abingdon School and could see the smoke from the burning vehicles, and I understand there were hundreds of vehicles that were burned, drifting over the children and their school vegetable garden as they played outdoors.
I smelled this awful odor on many occasions and heard loud explosions that rattled the windows. Called the County Manager's office but never received a response about what was occurring and where.
NO more Democrats elected to the County Board NO
Same people who spent thousands of dollars posting signs in public parks sternly warning park users not to smoke?
