Hi Yupette,
If anything this blog underestimates the traffic problems a streetcar system will create on the Pike.
I regularly visit Portland and Seattle. Takes at least an hour to clear an auto-streetcar accident without injuries, because the 4-wheel vehicle almost always cannot be driven and the streetcar has to be inspected for damage.
Also, takes an hour when a bicyclist who's thrown off his or her bicycle and breaks bones or suffers a concussion for the police and paramedics to reach the scene and take the person to the hospital.
Why is so much time, effort, and money being expended on designing more irrational shared-street streetcar systems?

Try 4-6 hours if the streetcar is derailed, or damaged so it can't be driven.
Chris Zimmerman is a nut case, that's why.
A photo you will never see on local news blogs, nor will you see a photo of state-of-the-art BRT. The local media are as corrupt as local government.
They are doing to the federal government what their parents did to manufacturing in the rust belt 50 years ago.
They are worse than their parents. Their parents took antiquated and dangerous streetcars off the streets.
The YuppieCrats' Parents in 1962: 'Don't worry, the taxes we collect from big American manufacturing corporations allows us to spend extravagantly for all kinds of public infrastructure.'
The YuppieCrats in 2012: 'Don't worry, the taxes we collect from big American corporations supporting the USA fighting big wars in the Third World, financed by borrowing from big manufacturing countries like China, allows us to spend extravagantly for all kinds of public infrastructure.
Anyone know what % of Zimmy's streetcar system will be Made in USA?
Outrageuosly biased media? Never mind the Sun Gazette. How about the national news media not showing us photos of the communities in NJ that were hard hit by Hurricane Sandy? Can't do that, the photos would show the McMansions of the Wall Streeters and other 1%-ers built on the beach or a block off the beach.
National media make up a big chunk of the 1%.
They meet on weekends with the Wall Streeters at the yacht club in Oceanfront NJ and complain about the 99% who are going to have to pay increased insurance premiums, utility bills, and taxes to keep the 1% living in luxury on the beach.
You think Rupert Murdock is going to allow the photos of the damaged beachfront mansions and McMansions owned by himself, his family, and the the executives of his corporations to appear in his newspapers and on Fox News?
Scott (aka $cott) McCaffrey runs his mouth about everyone and everything except the management of his own newspaper, allegedly owned by a buckaroo named Richard L. Connor. Check him out on Wiki.
Speaking of 1962, do a Wiki search on 'Northern Virginia Sun'. Yes, Yupette, you are correct, Sun Gazette in recent years is high school journalism at its worst.
Arlington in 1962 had a flourishing 2-party system. For the past quarter century we've had political machine government which has deteriorated into a corrupt regime.
I grew up and my parents still live in Lincroft N.J. Yes, many expensive homes on the beach up and down the Jersey Shore were destroyed or heavily damaged by Sandy.
Fender bender? My Civic's driver-side front wheel and headlight area was crumpled by a streetcar whose driver chose not to obey the rules of the road in 2010. Traffic was tied up for two hours.
Know what's REALLY pathetic? Like Cuba we have to wait until the megalomaniac who controls the regime croaks or goes on life support for anything to change from the regime and its cronies controlling everyone and everything to benefit themselves.
Maybe Zimmy will just retire to a county/city/community that's banned "smart growth". Hope it happens soon.
Bicycle groups should be outraged about streetcars and streetcar tracks and should be demanding BRT on the Pike.
Like the local media they trade silence for $$$.
