Libby Garvey's Choice for the Pike: Die for Zimmerman's Streetcar

Hello,

At last night's County Board meeting the County Board voted to spend $4.5 million for 'Preliminary Engineering and Design for Columbia Pike Streetcar Project' starting July 1, 2012. The State of Virginia will provide a grant of $1,755,000 and Arlington taxpayers are already providing $2,745,000.

The County Board, including Libby Garvey, were asked to defer spending for Pike streetcar system engineering and design until the Civic Federation, Transportation Commission, and other groups can discuss and debate Peter Rousselot's recent paper "A Modern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System is Far Superior to Streetcars in the Columbia Pike Corridor".

The County Board refused to even discuss deferring spending for Pike streetcar system design and engineering and voted unanimously to go forward with the project.

Whatever Libby Garvey may have told the Washington Post earlier this month, when confronted with the choices of  living with a modern bus rapid transit system on the Pike or dying for Zimmerman's streetcar, she chose - die for Zimmerman's streetcar.

It's obvious that Libby Garvey's present and future service on the County Board is and will be based on blatant political posturing. Whatever she may say, she's going to vote to support the status quo, as defined by Chris Zimmerman. Moreover, the promises she made when running for County Board last Spring were forgotten once she was elected. Libby has become like the rest of the County Board, prevaricating pols who have held office in Arlington way too long.

Lying Libby...what else is new with her?

Why don't they call themselves what they are - The Arlington County Board of Irresponsibility?

Anonymous said...

Irresponsible? No one in Arlington County Government has said a word about safety issues related to the Pike streetcar.

Irresponsible? None of the Biketard for-profits and non-profits have said a word about safety issues related to the Pike streetcar.

Irresponsible? How about the Arlington Public School System, which has not said a word about kids having to cross streetcar tracks on their way to school?

Right on, Cindy - especially your last sentence!

County Board and School Board are holding a joint meeting today. One topic on the agenda is multimodal safety. Details on arlingtonva.us under Board Meetings.

County Board and School Board will continue to go along with the non-residents who completely control Arlington's development and redevelopment and who want to totally urbanize Arlington.

Ashlawn School? Redeveloped into a recreation center-parking lot-school with too few classrooms for 2020 thanks to the non-resident a-holes (Donnellan, Holzheimer, and Brosnan) who make the 'planning' decisions along with the out-of-state corporate pirates they invite to 'smart growth' Arlington.

First things I would do if elected to the County Board: FIRE Barbara Donnellan, Terry Holzeimer, and Bob Brosnan. Also the non-resident County Attorney, Police Chief, Fire Chief, and Clerk of the County Board.

Warn the attorneys who represent the REITs that they will be arrested as 'public nuisances' if they continue to lobby County Staff during working hours.

First thing I would do if elected to the C.B. - tell Terry Holzheimer to Smart Growth his own exclusive enclave in McLean.

'Attorneys who lobby County Staff during working hours'?

You mean the attorneys for the REITs who help County Staff compose the pro-developer / pro-development messages they post on ArlNow and other news blogs when the attorneys are not posting their own pro-development / pro-developer messages on the news blogs?

Fire all the non-resident deputy and assistant County Managers too. Especially the on-the-job retirees who work from home in Fairfax County.

I am 60 years old and never liked bicycles. Why do I have to subsidize these obnoxious Lance Wannabes who run traffic lights and stop signs on their racing bikes with my tax dollars? If the County doesn't want people to drive why does it allow developers to construct huge parking garages?

Guess who are among the Lance Wannabes running stop signs and traffic lights? At least a dozen Arlington Police officers.

Worst are the non-resident Assistant County Managers and other non-resident County VIPs who drop off their kids at Arlington schools, check their e-mail at 2100, then spend the day on various personal matters until its time to pick the kids up and drive home.

First of all, dump Arlington's First Squirrel, Libby Garvey, on November 6th.

First thing I would do on County Board - fire Terry Holzheimer.

Buy a $2400 bicycle? Pay personal property tax on it.

Great idea. Personal property tax on bicycles should go to pay for the infrastructure the biketards want.
