Mobilize the National Guard - A S A P

Hello,

We have heard and seen enough reports of elderly Arlington residents dying this weekend in their homes where there is no air conditioning and the interior temperature is 90 degrees.

We have heard and seen enough reports of Arlington Public Works employees concentrating on removing as many downed tree limbs as possible, rather than helping Virginia Power restore power.

We have heard and seen enough reports of Arlington's elected and appointed VIPs treating the June 29th storm disaster as a 'usual summer inconvenience".

Consequently, we are contacting Governor McDonnell and General Craig McKinley, Commander of the United States National Guard, Headquartered at Arlington Hall, Virginia (Arlington County), to mobilize the Virginia National Guard to assist Arlington and other local governments to prevent further loss of life and, without delay, restore electric power and communications in areas of storm devastation.

Anyone have the NG number to call here in Arlington? National Guard leadership all work in Arlington so they live around here also.

What about FEMA, what's their phone number?

"Jamie, you're doing a hell of a job collecting all those downed tree limbs".

Hey, it's Monday morning. County Government is back. Three hot as hell nights w/o power. Thanks, Mary, Jose',Jay, Zimmy, Libby.

Again, people who are elderly and/or have health issues should not be living in overheated buildings. Anyone who's stuck in a hot building w/o power and AC should LEAVE for family and friends or vacation until the power and AC come back on.

Appears several more elderly Arlington residents died overnight from the effects of no electric power and air conditioning.

Whatever the bloated PR staff in the County Manager's office is telling the networks, the reality is that County Government was away for the weekend from 5 PM Friday to 8 AM Monday.

I also blame VEPCO...many utility poles and the electrical hardware installed on them are over 40 years old. Why does VEPCO's infrastructure have to fail catastrophically before it's replaced?

Progress is much too slow in Arlington County, one of only two counties in Virginia with a large public works department.

Mobilize the National Guard. They've been helping everyone else in the world, get them here to help US!

First thing they can do...have MPs direct traffic at intersections where traffic lights don't have power.

Second thing the National Guard can do...bring in mobile cranes to lift tree trunks that are blocking roads.

Third thing that the national Guard can do...set up field heat casualty treatment and prevention stations, using technology that helped treat heat casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Call the Governor's office. Governor McDonnell can and must mobilize the Virginia National Guard. 804-786-2211

I'm interested in finding out more about these cases. What are your sources? Maybe the community can pull together and do something?

County's emergency preparedness organization is keeping an unofficial count of residents who have been found deceased in their homes because of excessive heat or died after being transported to a hospital because they were in a high temperature environment and felt ill. Count stands at over 30 since Friday evening. At some times over the past 3 days the County's 911 operators received up to 15 calls per hour by persons feeling ill and family members who had not had contact a relative. Hundreds of Arlington residents have visited hospitals over the past three days because of heat-related conditions.

Do Something? As this blog has repeatedly stated over the past 3 days, get people out of overheated buildings until the power and AC come back on, especially the elderly and people with conditions like emphysema and congestive heart failure.

Problems with Arlington's Emergency Communications Center's 911 system? ECC only cost taxpayers $14 million three years ago.

Doing something, as in: identifying where the affected elderly are located and an alternate space for them to be housed, ideally with appropriate health resources if they are not able to be placed with family. In other words, volunteering to make the situation better.

Arlington County knows all about where seniors are located. Don't meed anymore volunteers, do need the non-residents in County Government to get the message to Arlington resident seniors to get out of stifling apartments, homes, condos until the power and AC come back on.

Know what the basic problem was? Entire damn County Government is non-residents, County Manager, Police Chief, Fire Chief, and so on. Off doing their thing in their classic suburbs (whole bunches of THEM have emergency generatirs) while we die like dogs in sweltering urban Arlington.

Who the hell came up with the shelter in place program for vulnerable people in all electric buildings?

Fire the County Manager. This happened before, Fourth of July last year, on the Arlington Palisades and Barbara Donnellan (who lives in Clifton) sent the crews around to remove limbs and branches and power stayed off for days. Zimmerman was confronted by Audrey Clement at last year's July Fourth parade in Douglas Park, she had visited the area up along Military Road and told Zimmy people were without power and he responded "What do you expect me to do?"

Should have been a wake up call. Same with Fairlington the year before.

Always a Zimmercrat ward heeler who tells me I have to volunteer to assist a bloated dysfunctional county bureaucracy that costs us a fortune to maintan.

Count of Arlington residents who have died at home or in hospital since Friday night from sheltering in place in overheated residences is about 50.

How criminal is it that seniors who live in Culpeper Apartments are allowed to suffer days of 90 degree heat while the National Guard just across Route 50 has thousands of emergency generators, some with locomotive engines for power?

Anonymous said...

Local blogs and newspapers have been ordered to censor information about storm damage and casualties.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, County Board doesn't want residents to escape the heat but wants to continue 'shelter in place' as its primary urban village idiocy.

Sorry, Seniors, National Guard generators are deployed to Afghanistan.

National Guard National "Readiness" Center's lack of action answers the question: "Why can't the U.S. defeat the poorly armed Taliban insurgents?"

Where IS the National Guard? The storm affected Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.

National Guard is helping defend America against Global Terrorism.

More seniors who live w/o AC and electric power are going to die by the end of this week.

Storm affected about 50 million Americans. Where was / is the National Guard?

Anonymous said...

Where do you get your numbers for people that have died from over heating? Guessing? Wishful thinking to support some government conspiracy? I really doubt there is a mass conspiracy to keep those numbers under wraps. I do believe the families of 50 people would be more than able to get the word out that family members died.

EMS has maintained a running tally since Friday night, shared with others in EMS.

Number of calls that got through to 911 where elderly residents w/o AC reported feeling ill because of the heat was in the hundreds.
