Derailments, Prolonged Power Outages Make Streetcars An Even Worse Alternative
Hello, Yupette,
I have been looking at the four options for transit on the Pike, same bus service, improved bus service, articulated buses, streetcars, and streetcars make no sense at all.
No one has even spoken about derailments and prolonged power outages. It's a huge operation to get a derailed streetcar back on the rails, the Pike would be closed in both directions for many hours.
If there were a prolonged loss of power, and this could occur for a number of reasons, streetcars would be immobilized, possibly for days. It would take hours for power to be restored if an overhead wire providing power to streetcars were to be damaged.
I've looked at cities that have had streetcars for decades (like Toronto) and many residents of these cities are exasperated at the problems streetcars cause.
It's beyond me why anyone with common sense would want an expensive and antiquated mode of transportation in a high density corridor with a high volume of pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic.

We have no common sense in county government. What we have are elected and appointed shills for out-of-state developers.
Streetcars would be powered by power from nuclear reactors and from burning mountaintop coal.

Ain't that the truth!
What we also have is a H-U-G-E economic development and planning bureaucracy in county government that markets our residential neighborhoods as "redevelopment opportunities" across the United States and Canada.
Said it before, County Manager, Economic Development Director, and CPHD Director live in the outer suburbs of Fairfax County.
You don't get to treat blacked out traffic lights like 4-way stop signs with streetcars.
You know who posts the dumbass comments on Arl Now (besides County employees)? The TDY contractors and military the County Board is redeveloping the Pike to accommodate.
Seen the Post Metro Section today? Mary Hynes continues Zimmerman's 'safety last' transportation agenda at WMATA.
Penrose Square is a f-ing ZOO. Pimps, Hoes, TDY military, TDY contractors, f-ing 24/7/365 Party Zone thanks to the County Board and CPRO.
5500? LOL !
Like Zimmerman's, Hynes's tenure at WMATA is all about Metrorail station cosmetics and bringing more people onto a rail transit system that's already at capacity.
Jeff, besides the a-holes who post comments on Arl Now who are county employees, want to know where the rest of the a-holes who post comments on Arl Now live?
The TDY Party Zones the County Board created on the Pike, Clarendon, Rosslyn, Ballston.
CPRO knows all about the hoes on the Pike.
What kind of 'culture' are we creating anywhere in Arlington that's being re-developed? An upscale restaurant and retail culture?
CPRO is the worst. Every neighborhood along the Pike a 'redevelopment opportunity'.
I'm with you! In a similar vein, http://pikespotter.com/ has some great posts on this issue.
When County Manager Barbara Donnellan, who lives in historic Clifton, was approached about being named County Manager, first thing out of her mouth was "As long as I don't have to move to Arlington".
No we are creating a fraternity and sorority culture - Dekes and Tekes.
Pen Rose Square = Phi Rho Sigma
Know long it would take to remove a derailed streetcar from the Pike in even a minor derailment? Try...all day.
Pimps and Hos are all over the County, the Pike, Clarendon, Crystal City, Shirlington. We have major league prostitution in this county.
Transients? Try the county board and the upper level management in county government. They are outta here within 5 years.
Power Outage? You mean like the big power outage that hit the Pike in Annandale this afternoon?
Anyone know how long it took the power to come back on in Annandale?
Is the Las Vegas articulated bus an alien spacecraft? No one in the Arlington government or the local media wants to show a photo of it.
