Irene + Isabel = Stop Paving Over Arlington County

Hello, Yupette,

We were indeed fortunate that Hurricane Irene tracked away from the Potomac River last week. Instead, Irene tracked up the Hudson River and caused severe damage from 8 to 13 inches of rain in the Hudson Valley and in Vermont.

Hurricane Isabel tracked up the James River in 2003 and dumped 8 to 12 inches of rain onto Richmond, which also caused severe flood damage.

Question has to be asked: What would happen if 8-12 inches of rain fell on Arlington in 24 hours? Next question: Why is the County Board so fired up about paving over Arlington without any comprehensive analysis of what would happen here if a hurricane like Irene and Isabel tracked up the Potomac?

Ask the County Board's planning consultants, Victor Dover and Joe Kohl. They live in Miami and know all about hurricanes.

County Board doesn't care. None of their homes would be flooded

People who make the planning decision don't care, they don't live in Arlington.

I doubt the majority of the County Board will be serving on the County Board in 5 years. They will be retired to someplace like Butte Montana.

The NY Thruway was flooded and it's way above the Hudson valley. The AMTRAK tracks between Albany and New York along the east bank of the Hudson were also flooded and buried by mudslides.

What would happen after the Zimmerfication of the Pike if 12 inches of rain fell on Arlington in 24 hours? Four Mile Run would be way over its banks.

What happens if 18 inches of rain falls in 24 hours?

We have 40 years left of life as we know it before the environment goes haywire. See the decision makers with young children (like Obama) expressing any concern? He just renewed the Bush Administration's air pollution regulations.

Major league infill project gets approved by the Planning Commission tonight.

Agreed. No one is asking - what kind of quality of life will my 9 year old child have in 2051 when she's 49?

Including the child's 32 year old parents who will also be alive in 2051.

Forty years? In four months we will be buried under multiple blizzards.
