Alexandria Pushing for Dedicated Bus Rapid Transit in Beauregard Corridor

Hello Yupette,

I attended tonight's Alexandria transportation forum about a dedicated transit corridor on South Beauregard Street.

Appears as though Alexandria Transportation Staff wants a dedicated bus rapid transit system rather than a shared-street streetcar system like what's planned for Columbia Pike. Alexandria Transportation Staff maintains that a dedicated bus transit system is the only way to finally get people out of their SOVs and into buses. They believe a dedicated BRT system would be fast, flexible, and significantly less expensive than a streetcar system.

What's sad about the inside the Beltway transportation planning process is how little people from different jurisdictions know about what's being planned for areas a mile or two from where they live but in another locality.

Alex.

Yuppette, did you see where Libby Garvey considers her neighborhood to be in Alexandria? So much for that livable, walkable tripe issued from Chris Zimmerman and his well-compensated acolytes.

Libby Garvey is never seen around Fairlington except when she's running for election or re-election.

She and Mary Hynes allowed Abingdon School to deteriorate into a recreation center, and the school was only saved by the PTA, and SOLs which she opposed.

She was all for Shirlington redevelopment, which brings thousands of people into Fairlington from Shirlington because there was no community, parks, and recreation infrastructure built in Shirlington. Now she and all the other "community leaders" who wanted the Shirlington mess are shopping, dining, etc. across Quaker Lane in Alexandria in the area referred to as Lindsay Village which, unlike Dumb Growth Shirlington, is livable.

Oh, where was she during the Pike Charades last week? Why didn't she attend the South Beauregard Corridor meetings in Alexandria? She's running to represent these areas, right?

The thinking by Alexandria transportation staff is that buses on a dedicated right of way would not be stuck in traffic like a streetcar on a shared street.

Chris Zimmerman does not talk about streetcars that are packed with commuters being stuck in traffic on the Pike.

Alexandria residents who live a mile from Arlington think Arlington residents take the bus to shop in Shirlington.

Why do Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and Fairfax County all need to do their own transportation planning?

Why do Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and Fairfax County all have to have their own local bus system? Falls Church no longer has one, not because it doesn't want one but because it was costing $8 in subsidies for every passenger.

Yupette, thinking among many inside the beltway transportation planners is to implement bus rapid transit first and then streetcars.

Anyone seen inside-the-beltway auto dealers expressing any concerns?

No one is going to get anything like streetcars while Bob McDonnell is Governor.

Libby Garvey...another irresponsible community leader, snoop, and busybody who's helping turn Fairlington into a recreation center, after turning Abingdon School, Gunston Middle School, and Wakefield HS into recreation centers.
