Longbridge Park to Cost Up to $300 Million

Hi Yupette,

Whatever the County Board may say about stretching spending for recreation at Longbridge Park (formerly the North Tract) over the next 15 years, the County Board is planning on spending extravagantly on a mega-recreation complex in the short term starting next year. A big bond package for the Fisette Aquatics Center will likely be on the ballot next year. Like the Artisphere, the Longbridge recreation complex will never be self-sustaining. The County Board is deliberately underestimating the costs associated with a mega-recreation complex, once construction starts it will be impossible to stop no matter how expensive or extravagant.

Th Fisette Aquatics Center is gonna ultimately cost $150 million no matter what they claim.

Only recreation activities they care about are field sports and aquatics.

Phase 2 construction will be a dedicated to indoor team sports, basketball, indoor tennis, hockey, etc.

This will be a very expensive facility to operate and maintain.

My child is in 2nd grade. We don't live anywhere near Longbridge park. How many years will my child be stuck in trailer classrooms so Gourmet Jay and Nada Tejada can bestow outrageously expensive infrastructure on their pet recreation and entertainment groups?

Phase II will be an indoor sports arena, not a neighborhood recreation center.

A couple of health clubs with pools near where I live (Fairlington) are desperate for new members. Also, there are something like 12 outdoor pools in Fairlington alone and the condo associations are starting to install pool heaters to keep them open from April to October.

As for hydrotherapy, why aren't the hospitals and physical therapists installing hydrotherapy pools if hydrotherapy is so beneficial? And how about the exclusive pool clubs? I heard that they will de facto own and operate the Jay Fisette Aquatics Center.

Barbara Donnellan admits there will be a 5,000 student increase in Arlington's school population over the next 5-8 years.
