Will Arlington be Gridlocked by SOVs? How Soon?

Where are the transportation alternatives for Arlington County over the next decade except more single-occupant vehicles and an expansion of the status quo transit system to include slow light rail and a few more ART Bus routes?

Take a look at Alexandria. Many major streets would be already gridlocked if the police werren't out directing traffic at intersections.

Alexandria's major non-defense industry is automotive sales and service.

The regional and local media could not publish and broadcast without advertising revenue from auto dealers.

Fairfax County is expanding Fairfax Connector (the intra-county bus service) to attempt to get more residents out of their vehicles. Appears any additional ART Bus routes in Arlington will be deferred for several years.

Of course Republicans want to buy Virginia's ABC stores. These are the same people who outsourced every profitable manufacturing plant that paid employees more than the minimum wage. Which they would pay everyone employed by the privatized liquor stores they owned.

What next from the Republicans? Selling the state parks and recreation areas to developers.

How many more roads will McDonnell sell and turn into toll roads?

Three of the people who pushed for mega-infill the hardest, Ferguson, Johnson, and Wasserman are outta here, leaving us with the mess.

First highway to be gridlocked will be Columbia Pike. It's pretty bad already at evening rush hours.

Notice that when Arlington's streets and roads have sidewalks installed they are also narrrowed with "traffic calming"?

Stand at a bus stop on the Pike and count how many SOVs drive past. It's at least half.

I blame the local media which are pro-SOV because that's where their ad revenue is derived, along with the ads for expensive in-fill condo buildings with 400 parking spaces under the building.

Another reason to dump Zimmerman next year. He's another arrogant pol who f'ed up Metro and is well on the way to completely f'ing up Arlington.

If anyone should know about gridlock it should be former Delegate and recent candidate for Governor Brian Moran, whose law office and home are close to near-gridlocked sections of Duke Street at Quaker Lane
