Arlington Competing for Another Expensive and Meaningless Award

According to press releases from Arlington County's PR Team, Arlington is competing in an expensive contest to win a prestigious award sponsored by the Intelligent Community Forum, a non-profit whose officers are also involved in expensive broadband consulting ventures with the same municipalities that compete for the award. According to County Staff, competing for the Intelligent Communities Award has so far cost Arlington taxpayers at least $100,000. Contestants that have "won" the award in the USA are typically economically depressed urban areas whose elected officials are desperate for economic development.

I wondered why Scott Arlington Chamber of Commerce McCaffrey featured this charade in the Sun Fisette blog today.

Meanwhile, Arlington's roads are falling apart, we have street lighting worse than most Third World Countries, traffic is getting to be like Third World urban areas, we have limited telecommuting to work despitye extensive broadband, etc.

I checked out ICF's Web site. Looks as though ICF et.al. are involved in moving Federal agencies and employees to the Rust Belt via broadband. Is that a plus for Arlington County?

Repigs who run Arlington don't care and haven't cared for years.

I visited their Web site. Looks like they are doing for the Rust Belt what Robert Byrd did for West Virginia. Why is Arlington involved in this?

IT people from India are judging the competition. Does this mean that the County Board will travel to India to receive the award?

Cindi, you can live in a luxury enclave in the Rust Belt where the streets are falling apart, street lighting is non-existent, and it's cold as hell in winter, when your job is "broadbanded". Or maybe you would prefer a small city in India? Of course the people who are doing the broadbanding live in 12,000 sq ft mansions in McLean.

Another Chamber of Commerce approved organization. This is why we need a real weekly newspaper in Arlington that's not a bunch of hype for the County Board and Chamber of Commerce.

Looks to me as though broadbanding is gonna be like manufacturing in the Sun Belt 40 years ago. All-new manufacturing infrastructure was constructed and then was exported, first to Mexico and then to China.

Shure I want to be a Nanny Nancy in my little Red Neck onclave in Mebane NC. How do we get them Federal Govment no-show jobs and get to spend our time putting everyone in Mebane under surveylance?

Hi Honey, I'm from Roxboro originally. The Federal agency you want broadbanded to Mebane is the F.D.I.C. Then you can micro-manage your community while watching banks across the USA fail, just like ole Nanny Nancy herself.

County Board discussed a site plan for yet another hotel today. Do they know about this award and the people behind it?

That's got it about right about ole Nanny Nancy at the F.D.I.C.

Want to see some heavy-duty Nanny Government behavior? Check out Saturday's public comment session at Saturday's County Board meeting. Why is Arlington being so punitive against owners of single-family homes for alleged code deficiencies?
