Paulie Ferguson aka Mr. Green Arlington lives 1/4 mile from Minnie Howard, Libby Garvey lives 1/4 mile from Minnie Howard, Planning Commissioner Nanny Hunt lives 1/2 mile from Minnie Howard. And Scott "Loopy Lefty" McCaffrey lives 1/2 mile from Minnie Howard. While Alexandria was doing Arlington's leaders were talking, and talking, and talking. They're still talking.

About 9 months ago there was a discussion by the County Board regarding Green schools and much talk by Jay Fisette and the CB about how they wished there could be Green schools in Arlington.

Joan said...

Of COURSE the CB only talks about stuff like solar and geothermal. They're committed to building a live theater for every live theater group in Arlington that wants one.

All the Arlington School Board and County Board were / are interested in is "green gimmicks" that don't cost much, like bike racks in a building's basement. So we have a whole lot of recently constructed buildings that are energy pigs but certified "Green". Another charade. What else is new in Arlington?

Arlington Civic Federation doesn't want to talk about really Green technology, just wants to go along with the same old same old. I gave up asking them to have a really Green energy consultant at a CivFed meeting rather than a LEED consultant.

LEED is a huge huge charade that allows massive amounts of fossil fuels to be consumed by newly-constructed buildings.

Does anyone know if Arlington even has any published base standard of energy efficiency for schools and public buildings? This is an interesting subject as I note how much of my taxes go directly to the schools.

New Arlington schools have "green gimmicks" like green roofs. Use more insulation and recent heating / ac technology. Energy efficient lighting. Beyond that, they still use a lot of energy. In recent years Arlington's public buildings have used nickel and dime "green" technology that saves 5 watts here and 10 watts there.

Well, anon., several years ago a local activist computed that if the swimming pools in Arlington's high schools had solar collectors on the roofs above the pools to heat the pool water it would save a lot of energy and a lot of money. He was called a "nutcase" by the school board and county board.

Paul Ferguson would not even discuss solar and geothermal when he was on the County Board. Last couple of months he was on the CB he made the developers install enough "green gimmicks" in new buildings to get the LEED scores up to 28.

Carrie Johnson was worse than Paulie when she was on the Planning Commission.

Difference between Carrie and Paulie? Carrie threatened to call the cops if you didn't go along with the program. Paulie called the cops.

We wanted solar on the roof of the Fairlington Community Center when it was renovated. Nancy Hunt said "no way" and told several Fairlington residents who pressed the issue that they were no longer welcome at Fairlington Citizens Association meetings (she was FCA President). She also refused to discuss solar when she was on the site plan committee for Shirlington redevelopment.

That's why Better Fairlington wants nothing to do with Nancy Hunt, Paul Ferguson, and others who've contributed to the traffic and air quality disaster our community is facing.

anon., basic answer is that anyone who wanted to save millions of tax dollars and a huge amount of fossil fuel from being consumed by implementing solar and geothermal technology was told by the school and county board Politburos and their community ward heelers to sit down and shut up. As for the Republicans, they think "Environment" is another 4-letter word.

Green buildings rather than Green charades? Forget it. Tejada and Fisette promised several live theater groups (first up is Teatro de la Luna) that the County would fund their live theater construction "as soon as economic conditions permit."

Nancy Hunt told at least 20 Fairlington residents they are not welcome at civic association meetings. Several for asking questions about FCA's finances.

Susan, the County Board just approved a $400,000 contract for slate roof replacement at the Fairlington Community Center.

Nanny Nancy Hunt, Paul Ferguson, and Carrie Johnson have only ever cared about making Shirlington an upscale Party Zone. Heard anything from them about HOT Lanes?

anon., Fairlington said...

We were not told about Fairlington Community Center roof replacement, ART Bus service through Fairlington, Minnie Howard, or anything by anyone. First we knew we saw it on the County Board's agenda. We were repeatedly informed about the doogie pool party in North Fairlington.

For what was spent on all the pet entertainment projects over the past 10 years we could have solar on the roofs of all Arlington's schools.

Why No Solar? said...

The Repubs think alternative energy is socialist. The Dems only think about entertainment and recreation.

The only green they're TRULY interested in is the green you have in your wallet -- they want it ALL

anon., Fairlington said...

All we are told about in Fairlington is tennis and doggie events. The citizens association is a bunch of promoters for whatever developers and county government want to impose on this community.

The antipathy towards any kind of public transportation, apart from airlines, is so bad that parents won't use the school bus system but drive their kids to school and pick them up.

FairGrrl said...

Yupette, the Greens were harassed and threatened with arrest when they left their literature in Fairlington the other day. Democrats left their lit and no one said anything to them,

Westover said...

What is it about parents not wanting their kids to take a school bus to school? It's 100 times safer than driving them.

Fair Girl, I offered to pass out card for the Greens this weekend & found these comments while trying to educate myself more about how people here see the Green Party. Can you tell me any more about the problem you had?

anon. 22206 said...

The Greens were harassed and threatened by the management of the Fairlington Villages condo community when they tried to leave campaign literature on residents' doorsteps. Of course Republicans and Democrats can leave as much literature as they want in Fairlington Villages.

L O L said...

Westover, about 400 parents drive their kids to Arlington schools because they no longer livd in Arlington County.

anon. Fairlington said...

Management of Fairlington Villages doesn't live in Fairlington. Fairlington Villages is becoming a local recreation and exercise area and it starts at 5 AM and ends at midnight. No one cares about that.

The Fairlington civic association and North Fairlington condo association want to micro-manage everyone's lives and also micro-manage the Shirlington Village Party Zone they helped create over the objections of many Fairlington residents.
