Arlington County's LEED Score Scam - Anti-Environment, Anti-Energy Efficiency?

How much do you think Arlington's reliance on the LEED score to measure building energy efficiency has cost in environmental and energy efficiency damage?

The LEED Score - a measure of building efficiency ranging from 0 to 69 - points has been a HUGE environmental scam in Arlington for at least 15 years. It was only a year ago that "Mr. Green" Paulie Ferguson began getting angry at developers for coming before the County Board with buildings having LEED scores of 23. Where was he the previous 11 3/4 years he was on the County Board? The County's entire environmental program is a scam, charade, and rip off that is nothing but a make-work project for the County's PR team and a major league give-away to developers.

The LEED score is a Yuppie environmental charade based on green gimmicks like bicycle racks in the basement of a new building, drought-resistant plants, and green rooftops.

Arlington County's Green buildings program is another give away to developers and political PR for the County Board.

Yes, and for the cost of all the green LEED gimmicks the building could have been constructed to be truly energy efficient.

If LEED Gold buildings are so green, where are the energy efficient insulation, triple paned windows, solar panels, and ultra high efficiency heating and air conditioning? And why does the building have 400 parking spaces?

LEED-certified "Green" buildings - another Arlington bi-partisan Republicrat scam to benefit out-of state-developers and the local print media who profit from the advertising.

All Arlington County cares about is more tax revenue. All the media care about is more ad revenue.

And the local media also publish press releases written by County employees at taxpayer expense. You have to rely on bloggers to know what's really going on.

Arlington's barf beige buildings are bad enough but an improvement over what Boss Zimmerman and Nanny Nancy Hunt grew up with under their mentor, Boss Rockefeller, i.e., unfinished concrete cubes that would start falling apart 6 months after being constructed. Groovy.

LEED is an energy efficiency joke. The builders and developers are laughing all the way to the bank.

I cannot obtain a commission to build a truly Green building anywhere in the USA. I would have to go to Northern Europe or Canada.

I am back, it has been a while but I have been catching up with the posts here.

Yupette, pls dont give the female Board members a pass. I note you have had individual posts about all the guys on the Board. I say this because I have been called out myself about giving wimmin a pass and I had to admit I was guilty as charged. We are not seeing the action we should see for the Earth from the two female members on the Board.

Green roof buildings are not so lame however. They seriously help the Chesapeake.

And the County employees who write the press releases depend on Zimmerman, Fisette, Favola, ....for promotions.

Barbara Favola has been pathetic on the County Board on environmental issues. Mary Hynes was pathetic on the School Board on environmental issues.

The worst part of LEED is the 400 parking spaces around and/or under the "Green" building.

Green roof buildings (vegetation planted on a roof) are another BAD LEED idea. They require irrigation during a drought and require plant nutrients which they leach into waste water.

Much better are solar panels which both shade the roof in summer and generate hot water and/or electricity all year.

Speaking of sunlight, have you noticed the window shades of the County Board Room are ALWAYS closed no matter what the meeting?

Mary Hynes and Barbara Favola are not worth talking about vis a vis the environment because there is nothing to talk about.

Help the Chesapeake? Been to Kent Island lately? Talk about paving the Bay! Meanwhile back in Arlington $538 million is being spent upgrading the wastewater treatment plant.

Anonymous said...

Been to Annapolis lately? McMansions right on the Bay with a big sailboat at the dock and highly polluting jet skis all over. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is another feel good Yuppie nonprofit that actually has done more to harm the Bay than any other "environmental" organization.

Notice the Sun-Gazette doesn't bother attributing PR press releases it publishes to a reporter or editor? The S-G staff are too busy pigging out at Chamber of Commerce holiday events.

USED to be the big dogs on the Bay owned a 30' sport fishing boat powered by a couple of 150 hp outboards, now it's a 38 foot sport fishing boat powered by three 300 hp outboards. These are the people you are saving the Bay for with your $538 million waste water treatment plant upgrade.

The stupid Greens only have to cross the Bay Bridge and look out the side windows when they are driving across Kent Island to see the future of "environmentalism."

Solar panels give cleaner energy but run-off is still a pollution problem, that is why I like it when a condo building puts green roofing in. If we cannot stop the govt from paving every thing, at least some private citizens offset the effect & it should be a big tax break. It also ought to be illegal for companies to sell lawn treatments that screw up the ground water just so John Homeowner can have his perfect no-weed lawn.

If you haven't driven to Delaware lately, take a nice drive across the Bay Bridge and up the Eastern Shore. You won't just see McMansions at the Bay's edge on Kent Island you will see big gas guzzling boats for sale all over and every other vehicle you see will be a gas guzzling pick up or SUV. Once you arrive in Delaware you will see the ENTIRE STATE is in the process of being paved over.

Obama and Biden could give a hoot about the environment. Obama and Biden only want the Yups and the Bubbas to buy new pick ups, SUVs, McMansions, boats, outboards, etc., etc., to get the economy going.

A green roof is another green gimmick, meanwhile the water from 200 parking spaces around the building with the green roof goes into storm sewers. LOL. Green roofs are another excuse to not install solar panels. Of course it's OK to install ugly dish antennas and cell antennas on buildings.

What do the Greens actually do except make some noise a couple months before election day?

Anonymous said...

We do things like pick through the trash in the parks to demonstrate how much the county should be recycling there. Want to put on some gloves and join us next time, Big Mouth?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, then after the Arlington Greens have their little demonstration picking through trash they adjourn to their main dude "Sierra Club Jim" Moran's Palace on the Palisades and enjoy brunch. Moran's home above the Potomac is such an energy pig its LEED score is a negative number!

Both the Green Party USA and IGs (Independent Green Party) are worthless when it comes to saving the environment. The IGs are Pro-Lifers who like trains and the GPUSA is concerned about human rights for Palestinians. Bunch of environmental phonies.

All opposition to the massive ongoing environmental destruction of the United States ended after 9-11-01. The Sierra Club is a group of fat cats who are paving paradise with their retirement McMansions. Greenpeace is whale watching in the Antarctic.

The U.S. population will reach 600 million well before 2100 and nobody is doing anything about the consequences except watch the roads, buildings, strip malls, etc. go up on prime wetlands, agricultural land, and forest land.

Anonymous said...

Any Green out there give a $#!+ about the millions of acres being paved over? Nope. They are all concerned about the buildings having "green" roofs. This is what 9-11-01 did to America. Turned the USA into the United Patriot Yuppie States.

Anonymous said...

Think the Obama Administration will care about the Environment? As much as any other big city pols ever have.

Anonymous said...

When the Greens aren't fighting among themselves they are fighting with other Green factions. They are worthless except as fodder for John Antonelli's next Jane Barcroft novel.

After a decade of saying no to solar on commercial and residential building rooftops Jay Fisette is finally advocating solar panels for buildings. Must mean he's facing re-election.

Anonymous said...

What Giveaway Jay and the County Board are going to do is give the developers a huge bonus density giveaway if they install a couple little solar panels on a building. Another green charade.

Jay is nothing but a Log Cabin Republican, more for the greedy, less for the needy.

Anonymous said...

If it weren't for Log Cabin Republicans like Jay Fisette hundreds of acres of solar would be installed on Arlington buildings by now. Anyone who advocated solar got trashed by the County Board Rumor Machine.

A.Y. set these people straight on Obama. You endorsed him for his environmental record.
