Shirlington-Nauck to be Redeveloped into Another Shirlington Village

Hi Yupette,

I attended thd Four Mile Run Valley Working Group meeting last night at the County's Trades Center. Surprise. Surprise. The done-deal is for Shirlington-Nauck to be redeveloped into an performing arts corridor, with a 500-seat theater and many other types of spaces for the performing arts (e.g. dance) and affordable live-work housing for performing artists.

Making the pitch for a performing arts corridor was the cultural affairs division of Arlington Economic Development, which has done little or nothing over the years for the commercial and industrial owners of older buildings in the corridor. Not only will Shirlington-Nauck be completely de-industrialized but there are no plans to construct long-needed community amenities for Nauck-Shirlington and South Arlington (e.g., a hardware store, a consumer electronics store, a shoe and leather repair shop, and so on). So future residents will not only have to drive miles for auto maintenance but for basic needs like cordless phone replacement batteries. And providers of essential services, like HVAC maintenance, will be forced to drive to Arlington from places like Stafford County.

County Board brought in Dover-Kohl for the usual design charettes (pronounced "charades"). Same Dover-Kohl responsible for gentrification planning for Columbia Pike and Lee Highway. As usual, the working group is packed with "community leaders" who go along with the program, yellow dog Democrat "facilitators", and performing arts group lobbyists.

Another older neighborhood, another Smart Growth redevelopment opportunity.

First County agency the incoming County Auditor should audit is Arlington Economic Development.

What is going on in this County? What are these horrible people doing to us? I did not move here and purchase a home here 15 years ago to be overwhelmed with people and their vehicles and their drunken behavior.

This will be a big lose-lose-lose for South Arlington residents. We lose essential services like auto repair, lose any possibility of more essential services, like a hardware store and immediate medical care facility, and lose tax revenue from thriving neighborhood businesses along Four Mile Run. Oh, we get to subsidize a dozen more performing arts facilities with tax dollars.

Performing arts groups are hedo pigs.

Isn't it obvious? Every performing arts group will get it's own building, subsidized by taxpayers.

Wonderful. I get to drive 30 miles to have my car serviced. So Jay Fisette's fellow hedos get the same taxpayer-funded deal Signature Theater got.

County Board, which pre-approved this, hopes the meals tax and sales tax from all the vibrant upscale restaurants and retail will exceed tax revenue from existing auto repair and similar services.

We also get to subsidize the performing artists with affordable live-work housing.

Latest in our vibrant local performing arts 'culture': Over 35, unattached, and pregnant.

Like other performing arts celebrities, local, regional, and national.

Signature in the Schools? ;~}

Signature was, is, and always will be a taxpayer-subsidized LGBTQ club, in the event you haven't figured it out.

Waaaaa....Waaaaa...we want a clubhouse like the Signature got.

Was this meeting an attempt by the Signature to pressure the County into building it a new 500 seat theater on or near the site of the original Signature Theater?

Some of the businesses have renovated they buildings they occupy on South Four Mile Run.

When the HVAC small businesses get booted out to PW County they will undoubtedly ride cargo bicycles on service calls to fix and replace heat pumps in South Arlington via Route 1 and the Mt. Vernon trail.

See anything in the local media about these gentrification planning meetings? You won't.

Fire AED Director Victor Hoskins. He's needed in Baltimore.

What vibrant restaurants? Some choice in Arlington -- bar food, ethnic food, and food truck food.

Is it legal to use AHIF funds to build affordable housing for one class of tenants - performing artists - to the exclusion of everyone else?

Deal was worked out at -- where else -- Busboys and Poets.

County Board would never have invited Dover-Kohl here again if they didn't want to completely demolish Four Mile Run Valley's existing infrastructure.

I try hard to spend money in Arlington. Soon, Arlington will be back to being just a suburb, with residents having to spend money in other cities for every thing besides groceries.

Let me guess. Signature is again threatening to leave Arlington unless the County builds a 500 seat theater to replace the Signature's 250 seat live theater?

Anyone else visited Bradlee Plaza lately, across King Street from Fairlington? This is where the new whole food market, immediate care, Michaels, ABC store, massage therapy place, new pet store, etc. that South Arlington residents patronize are located.

Signature again threatened Arlington Government that it would move away if the County doesn't build a 500 seat theater, plus affordable housing for Signature's artists in residence, interns, stage crew, administrative staff, etc.

More threats from Signature to move out of Arlington? What else is new from them?

Why should I continue to vote for people who allow our neighborhoods to become run down so they can be bulldozed as part of the Ruling Elite's agenda to make Arlington into Portland-on-the-Potomac at a cost of more than a billion dollars? Time for Jay Fi$ette (who has been Arlington's First Elitist for decades) to reture to his estate in Florida. Twenty years of Club Hedocrat are enough.

Outrageous that the Signature would demand a new 500 seat theater. The County bailed them out a couple years ago to the tune of $20 million.

Anonymous said...

Rosslyn Spectrum also wants a big new theater.

So County taxpayers will fork over hundreds of millions for a dozen (or more) performing arts venues along S Four Mile Run? And subsidize several hundred performing artists' affordable cribs?

Alexandria has placed massive mixed-use redevelopment on hold. Existing buildings in Arlandria are being renovated rather than demolished.

All the dance groups each want their own building on Four Mile Run. People who are into the performing arts are so wealthy it's disgusting. But guess who will pay for all of their wants? Taxpayers.

We can't get the streets repaved, sidewalks fixed, or modern street lighting 'cause so much tax revenue goes to buy special interest votes.

Dump Jay Fisette who is the Godfather of the Performing Arts, to the tune of a hundred million dollars or more since he was first elected.

WETA will also get a taxpayer-funded deal on a new production building. Jay's dog-owner special interests will also receive taxpayer-funded deals for new buildings.
