WETA 'Seriously Considering' Leaving Arlington

Hello,

Several Fairlington and Shirlington residents who contribute to AY attended the County Board's community walking tour of Shirlington-Nauck last Sunday afternoon. They met several WETA staff who stated WETA is 'very unhappy' with the 'grimy industrial environment' in Shirlington and along Four Mile Run, where WETA has its studios. WETA Staff cited the 'serious deterioration' of the entire area, ranging from heavy construction vehicles and ART buses parked along Four Mile Run Drive to the 'outdoor food court' that Shirlington Village has become. WETA's Board of Directors tolerated the move of the day laborers' drop-off and pick-up to next door to WETA's studios ten years ago but is increasingly unhappy that Arlington County has done next to nothing to stop the area's deterioration, especially since the County now owns many buildings in the area. Consequently, AY and others believe County Government has only itself to blame if WETA follows NSF out of Arlington.

Photo was taken before the open space became an ART bus parking lot.

WETA has at least one offer from an in-side-the-Beltway jurisdiction it will be hard for its Board of Directors to refuse.

WETA staffers expressed their unhappiness in front of Christian Dorsey and Katie Cristol on Sunday.

What did they expect would happen? County Government packed more industrial infrastructure that no other neighborhood wanted into this area. Few or no upgrades. Look at the building that was the former Signaturee Theater that the County now owns and lets the Signature use free of charge. What an eyesore.

The auto repair and collision repair businesses along Four Mile Run are thriving. What happens if they are forced to move?

County has an open checkbook when it comes to Parks and Rec's wants.

How many people work at WETA? Not many.

Anonymous said...

As many as work at NSF.

Always plenty of money to bail out the $ignature, using taxes from small businesses.

Dump all Democratic incumbents.

If I ran an upscale non-profit I would have been outta Shirlington years ago.

Why am I hot surprised. WETA has intellectual content. Like NSF. Like the Planetarium. Like an environmental education center at Reeves Farm.

County Planning Staff seriously pissed off WETA Staff on Sunday with their derogatory comments about the station.

Then there are the pampered pets and starving humans adjacent to each other.

County's priorities are so inverted it's frightening. Tens of millions of tax dollars spent each year on state-of-the-art lighted synthetic playing fields. Millions of tax dollars spent to buy and tear down single family homes adjacent to public parks. County won't even consider granting no-interest loans to small businesses for basic cosmetic renovations.

Anyone see what's happening in Ballston - Virginia Square? Run down streetscape with used car lots everywhere is causing commercial and retail tenants to move out when their leases in 15-30 year old buildings expire.

AED 'success story'....used car lot owner across Glebe Road from AED's office suite has upgraded from selling used Nissans to selling used Mercedes.

Why do Shirlington small businesses that cater to dog owners get start up funding from the County while Economic Development ignores the other small businesses in Shirlington?

Take a walk from AED's luxury suite of offices on Glebe Road down Fairfax Drive to Virginia Square and count all the "For Lease" signs in the ground floor windows of older buildings.

Dump Victor Hoskins.

Second the motion.

Ballston BID finally decided that it's time to improve the streetscape along Fairfax Drive, after years of throwing galas and sponsoring noontime entertainment.

Dump Hoskins. Dump the non-resident law firms, REITS, developers, architects, consultants, etc. who inflict New Urbanism on neighborhood after neighborhood. Bring new companies and people with a different vision and afenda into the County.

How about bringing a team of non Smart Growth architects and planners here to take a look at Shirlington and offer a second opinion?

County Planning Staff has already decided that the industrial activities and human services activities have got to go. Pampered pooches are OK, hungry humans no way.

Decision reached at the New Year's Day ACDC-County Board Meeting was to remove human services and industrial infrastructure from Shirlington Crescent.

Decisions are all made for us by the County Board, ACDC, County Staff, and selected Community Leaders long before we are informed about what has been decided.

Just read in the Po$t that the $ignature Theater and Di$ney are collaborating on yet another retro revival, remake of "Freaky Friday." Does this mean Di$ney, rather than Arlington taxpayers, gets to bail out the $ignature next time the $ignature needs a $20 million cash infusion?

Anonymous said...

More likely Arlington taxpayers will bail out Disney and the Signature if the revival of Freaky Friday flops.

Seen a photo of Lindsay Lohan lately? She could play the mother in a Freaky Friday revival.

County should at least paint and pressure wash the front facade of the former Signature Theater.

VDOT wanted to move out of Four Mile Run to a new location in Fairfax County near Falls Church. Only thing that prevented the move was the neighbors in the new location didn't want the traffic.

Soon to be designated the Creative Class Canine Redevelopment Zone...Woof.
