SUV Parent Scofflaws Endorse Dorsey

Hi Cindy,

What is it with so many parents running Stop signs mornings and afternoons at Abingdon School and other schools in Arlington where dropping off and picking up students is so prevalent that school buses are a third full?

At Abingdon School, PTA parent and County Board candidate Christian Dorsey promised parents who drive their kids to school there would continue to be no enforcement of Stop sign and speeding traffic ordinances during school arrival and dismissal times. Dorsey and his family live near Columbia Pike, not anywhere near Abingdon School.

Like most Abingdon parents who don't live in the Abingdon School neighborhood Christian Dorsey believes that Abingdon neighbors are 'nuisances' whose quality-of-life concerns should be ignored. Not hard to imagine what kind of County Board member he'd be.

Even worse, the Arlington Education Association, which endorsed Christian Dorsey, is well-aware of scofflaw parents zooming through residential neighborhoods in Arlington. But AEA won't say anything for fear of offending teachers and school staff who also zoom through neighborhoods when they're late for work.

As for the Arlington Police, we have a 100% reactive police force so I expect nothing from them. They are so bad that two of them live near S. 29th and S. Abingdon and have zero concern about our neighborhood.

Given Christian Dorsey's F--- Y-- attitude towards this neighborhood there is no way I'm voting for him on November 3rd.

Thanks for this blog.

F--- Y--- attitude towards the Abingdon School neighborhood? No fooling. Christian Dorsey was appointed to the Abingdon School Building Level Planning Committee, attended 3 committee meetings, and his only interest was bigger parking lots and turn-arounds for himself and the other Abingdon SUV parents.

The school's neighbors had to hire a planning attorney, which cost them something like $25,000, to ensure their concerns about construction impacts to their homes were seriously considered by the County Board.

Scott McCaffrey has lived 100 yards from Abingdon School for years and also has zero concern about quality-of-life issues in his own neighborhood.

Thanks to Abingdon's SUV parents the renovated and expanded school will have wonderful outdoor parking lots but the indoor air quality will be poor-to-mediocre and the building won't even be LEED Silver certified.

Nearby Abingdon School residents have petitioned for a crossing guard at S. Abingdon and S. 29th Street but the County Board isn't interested.

Apparently, Dorsey and other parents who drive their kids to school told the County that a crossing guard would delay them by 10 minutes and cause a traffic backup.

So it's OK to run Stop signs near Abingdon and near other schools around the County.

Christian Dorsey hasn't recently attended many meetings of any kind except for candidate forums.

Arlington Police Department is not only completely reactive but totally corrupt.

The above photo exactly depicts what Christian Dorey would be all about when on the County Board...looking for business deals with Republicans and Conservatives to enrich himself.

Christian Dorsey is a macroeconomic analyst for a D.C. non-profit that does research on wealth issues. In plain English he's a poverty pimp.

AEA also told the County it doesn't want to see Stop signs and speed limits near schools enforced by the police.

Dorsey and Cristol are going right along with all the Smart Growth 'planning' for multi-modal gridlock. Do the math - 66,000 more people + 66,000 more bicycles + 66,000 more motor vehicles packed into a tiny county over the next 25 years.

They may all TALK about open space, school capacity, and affordable housing, but look at the deal Shooshan got from the County Board last night.

Arlington needs what DC is getting. Cops on mountain bikes chasing and arresting scofflaws.

AEA, Dorsey, and Cristol know that at least 400 APS students and their parents don't live in Arlington.

"Captain, it appears the Arlingtonians are worshiping box buildings with bars and restaurants on the ground floor".

For what is being spent on bicycles usable for commuting about 6 months per year we could have a year-around comprehensive shuttle bus service supplementing ART buses.

How much do school buses that are 1/3 full cost taxpayers?

Shooshan gets to put a 3-building mixed-use complex on the Red Top Cab site. Lyon Village residents get a pocket park + 850 more residents, + 250 more bicycles + 580 more vehicles in their neighborhood.

Second the motion for Arlington cops on bicycles to apprehend scofflaws.

If school buses are 1/3 full can APS save taxpayers some $$$ by purchasing and operating smaller school buses and using vans rather than buses where appropriate?

Latest on this is there are 3 police cruisers usually parked near S. 29th and S. Abingdon Street and reportedly 4 Arlington Police officers live near that intersection and there is ZERO enforcement when bicycle and motor vehicle scofflaws run stop signs at the intersection.

I live in Fairlington. WHAT (if anything) do the Arlington Police Officers who live near S. 29th and S. Abingdon actually DO? They appear to be working from home, 24/7/365.
