Our Choices for the Pike: Die for Zimmerman's Streetcar or Live with BRT

Hello, Yupette,

Thanks for your blog.

It's obvious we have two choices for Pike transit - we can be killed and be injured by collisions with streetcars and streetcar tracks because Chris Zimmerman is allowed to inflict his megalomaniacal streetcar system on Columbia Pike, or we can all live with bus rapid transit, like the Las Vegas Ace BRT system.

I was happy to see and read Peter Rousselot's recent paper: "A Modern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System is Far Superior to Streetcars in the Columbia Pike Corridor". Peter refers to a planned BRT system for Eugene Oregon and provides a YouTube video link for the proposed system - http://www.youtube.com.watch?v=ia3W6RBAJxY

I agree with A.Y.'s assertion that the costs from deaths, injuries, and property damage caused by a Pike streetcar system would amount to $15 million to $20 million per year. Accidents would also tie up streetcar tracks for hours causing significant economic loss for every serious accident and many accidents that are not serious.

It is beyond me why the Federal Transit Administration would even evaluate a grant application for an outrageously expensive and dangerous shared street streetcar system on a congested arterial that already has good bus service.

Dennis,
Barcroft

Don't leave out the local media, starting with the Post, that refuse to even show photos of state-of-the-art bus rapid transit.

Local media (Sun Gazette, Patch, ArlNow, and others) are only concerned about advertising revenue and obtaining interviews and inside information from local VIPs and celebrities.

Amen and right on to the writer of the post and the two comments so far! Zimmie's folley is as big a wasteful and expensive boondoggle as the so-called "artisphere."

I want to see Zimmerman and the the others who are submitting a fraudulent grants application for $75 million to the Federal Transit Administrations ...locked up! Zimmerman should already be in federal prison for allowing massive safety violations to occur in the Metrorail system when he was on the WMATA Board.

Sun Gazette, ArlNow, and Patch news blogs are completely in Zimmerman's pockets. Joke about the news blogs is their Editors are so greedy that they spell their names with dollar signs: $cott McCaffrey, Ja$on $pencer, etc.

Libby Garvey is as worthless as the rest of the County Board. If her opponents weren't against Zimmy's Pike streetcar system Libby would be promoting it.

Mary Hyne$ followed up on Zimmy's '$afety La$t' agenda for Metrorail: got caught with the passenger emergency exits blocked at Metrorail stations just last year.

Arti$phere is chump change compared to the total operating cost of a Pike $treetcar $ystem.

The Regime has informed Patch $tatu$-Quo Boo$ter Ja$on $pencer not to publish any information about state of the art BRT on Patch --- or else.

"Culture of Fear" in Arlington? What's that mean?

Motorized scooters for the disabled, infant and child strollers, skateboards are also at risk.

Yupette, look at what's going on with the H. Street tracks in DC. DC government is unsure what to do about bicycles and the tracks. Already many accidents.

Mountain bike and BMX bike riders are using railroad and streetcar tracks for recreation - how far they can ride on a rail.

Libby may like Peter Rousselot's pro-BRT paper but at tonight's C.B. meeting she refused to make a motion to defer design and engineering spending for the Pike streetcar until after Rousselot's paper can be evaluated by the CivFed, Transportation Commission, etc.

Libby Garvey's choice at tonight's County Board Meeting: Die for Chris Zimmerman's streetcar system.

I agree that Zimmerman should be serving 5-20 years in the Lewisburg Federal Prison for his 'cosmetics first, safety last' program while he was on the WMATA Board,

Looks to me like - and I've been involved in Democratic Party campaigns for 25 years - Matt Wavro has a 50-50 probability of being elected to the County Board.

Libby is looking more and more like another do-nothing Zimmercrat.

Fire the non-residents who control the County Board's propaganda machine, starting with Diana Sun.
