Zimmerman Tells DES, Planning, to Ignore Flooding Potential From Pike Redevelopment

Hi Yupette,

As you may have heard, there was significant flash flooding in the area along the Falls Church-Arlington border last night and also flooding along Four Mile Run and on streets and roads throughout Arlington.

You may not have heard that County Board Chairman Chris Zimmerman told DES and Planning to ignore concerns expressed by DES and Planning employees about the potential for major flooding resulting from Columbia Pike redevelopment.

At this point Mr. Zimmerman just wants to get his trolley through the planning process and any concerns expressed by anyone on County Staff about massive flooding on the Pike resulting from massive in-fill redevelopment are simply not allowed. It's reached the point where several members of the DES engineering staff are considering finding other employment rather than sign off on the Dover, Kohl in-fill plans.

Yeah, Zimmy can't have all that stormwater running off onto the extensive laws surrounding the present buildings.

Zimmy lives at the top of a hill and across the street from Douglas Wilderness Park. The wall of water gets to run down 16th Street and flood Barcroft Apartments before flooding Four Mile Run.

Nada Tejada has no problema with Four Mile Run flooding in his own neighborhood. But he also lives on a hill.

Has DES figured out what would happen to Longbridge Park if a 20 foot storm surge from a hurricane came up the Potomac?

County Board? They are only interested in getting Hynes and Tejada re-elected so they can continue to wheel and deal with developers.

See today's Post? Cars washed away and people inside drowned. Could easily happen in Arlington if enough rain fell.

Many basements were flooded.

Next round of Pike planning charades are October 18th and 19th.

There was widespread flooding along the Four Mile Run bicycle trail. This issue should be addressed as soon as possible by whomever is planning additional infill on the Pike.

County Board never saw a natural grass playing field it didn't want to replace with a synthetic surface at $1 million with a replacement cost of $800,000 after 7 years.

Now they want to 'save' historic buildings by transferring development rights to owners of strip shopping plazas in your neighborhood.

Nada Tejada and Whitlow's Mary Hynes don't think Westover is 'trendy' enough. Mary wants to redevelop Westover and transform the Forest Inn into "Whitlows West".

Nada Tejada wants to see a redeveloped Westover Market become an anchor for Central American dining, dancing, and culture in western Arlington. He would name the new restaurant/cafe/nightclub after himself "El Primo Puto".
