Howard Manor Residents: "Mr. Zimmerman, We Are the Classmates of the County Board's Children"

Dear County Board Chairman Zimmerman:

I am a resident of Howard Manor Apartments. I am in my mid-20s. I and most of the residents who live at Howard Manor Apartments are starting our professional careers. Mine is in education. Yes, I earn $49,000 per year. But I also have to pay back $5,000 per year in student loans. Howard Manor is a great place to live. As we related to you at Tuesday's County Board Meeting, we are a highly diverse rental community.

You and Ms. Hynes and Ms. Favola have children who are about our age. I am sure that if your children were in a situation similar to ours in another jurisdiction you would be very unhappy that your children were "gentrified out" of market-rate affordable housing by an out-of-state developer with assistance from that jurisdiction's government.

Mr. Zimmerman, you and the Arlington County Board owe Howard Manor residents a big apology for the way we have been treated. Most of us are young Democrats and have, until now, supported the Arlington Democratic Party's and County Board's objectives like Smart Growth and Transit-Oriented Development. But, after reading the postings on Arlington Yupette and other local blogs, it appears that all you and the rest of County Government care about is making affordable market rate rental communities like ours "redevelopment opportunities" for out-of-state developers. Unless and until you and the County Board begin to follow the diversity agenda you set for others we cannot continue to support you or the Arlington Democratic Party.

Anyone know if County Board members' children are living in market-rate apartments on the County Board's list for yupscale gentrification? Bet a doughnut they are not.

I will not vote for Mary Hynes in November. I am sure she's all for her five children succeeding. But I'm not sure what she's ever done to help my kid succeed.

Yupette, you are AWESOME !! When I graduate from Marymount on a soccer scholarship I am going to be coaching soccer. And I do not want to live with my Mom anymore. And I don't want to have to commute 45 miles one-way to coach soccer at Yorktown HS !!

What is WRONG with the County Board? It's like they are brain dead. Do they and can they relate to their own children anymore? It's like they are mentally challenged when it come to housing. Why does everyone have to spend $600,000 for a condo or $1.6 million for a McMansion?

It's time someone who is 25 years old runs against the people who are now on the County Board who are acting like a bunch of geezers.

Read the Post Metro Section yesterday? Mary Hynes is too busy trying to keep in touch with the monthly management turnover at WMATA to be concerned about anything else.

If Mary Hynes is going to be micro-managing WMATA, or more accurately observing the micro-management of WMATA by yet another group of consultants, managers brought in from other city transit systems, etc., she should not be running for County Board. Give us a break.

I am also turned off by her sanctimonious comments about everyone and everything. All she is really capable of doing is going along with the program.

I agree 110% with Buffy. Does any 50 year old adult in this county care about their childrens' future?

Most of the children who will be born in 2025 will be alive in 2100, when the population of the United States will be close to 600 million. They will be Obama's grandchildren.

Did ya know how said...

affordable housing works for teachers in Chris Zimmerman's household?

Get your daughter hired by APS, let her keep her bedroom upstairs and travel around the County in Mommy's car. Zimmerman takes care of his own -- couldn't give a damn about anyone else.

Who is the County Board representing? Not the people who elected them, obviously.

Is Chris Zimmerman strange, or what? When your kids graduate from college and get a job are they supposed to go on living with their parents or be off on their own living in an affordable rental apartment?

Hello, May I speak with Jane Smith? Ms. Smith this is John Doe from Arlington Democratic Headquarters. We calling Young Democrats like you to ask if you can drop literature at the Howard Manor Apartments where you live for our County Board candidates, Walter Tejada and Mary Hynes on Messenger Day this year.
