Arlington Treasurer's Data Indicate Arlington's Economy Is Vulnerable

Hi Yupette,

I was recently able to peruse data from Arlington Treasurer Frank O'Leary's office regarding restaurants that are in arrears in meal tax payments and it appears that 30 restaurants in Arlington are least $10,000 in arrears on any given day. Also, the Artisphere is going to be taxpayer-subsidized for many years, according to reports from the County Manager's Office. With the Neo-Cons cutting even essential federal spending what are the consequences of the County Board pursuing the total Yuppification of Arlington County via "development for the sake of development"? The County's economy looks awfully shaky.

What is Frank O'Leary doing with the meals tax? Loaning meals tax receipts to struggling restaurants to keep them in operation and keeping the County's 'development for the sake of development' charade going? Is this County becoming a Ponzi scheme? What's going on?

Did you see previous posts on AY? Frank O'Leary's vehicle tax decal program will cost taxpayers at least a million dollars this year.

Oh, Great. Arlington's economic future depends on freaking everybody getting a handout from the County except for the homeowners who pay for all the handouts.

Arlington County Government a Ponzi Scheme? Ask Republicrats Wayne Kubicki and Tim Wise what's going on.

Ask Mr. Yupscale Restaurant Booster, aka Pike Wire, what's going on.

Don't worry, be happy, they are taxing and spending the County into bankruptcy but they will be long gone when it happens, retired to a gated community in a luxury enclave.

Many restaurants are barely hanging on.

Most of the restaurant workers who live along the Pike and work in Pike restaurants don't earn enough to live in the new Arlington Mill residences. Maybe some restaurant owners are doing well, not the workers.

Why don't the mega-billion REITs that own the big ugly buildings on the Pike subsidize the restaurants in their buildings?

Where is the Arlington Chamber of Commerce? Oh, they don't like small business, don't like minorities, and are busy organizing another junket to China.

Roman Empire in 300 A.D., the Empire was crumbling but the party went on in Rome.

Arlington Mill? Isn't it obvious? Arlington Mill was designed as housing for Pentagon workers who will take the streetcar to and from work. The County Board is racist and elitist and wants Latinos and other minorities out of Arlington in the worst way.

Close to a million owed by the thirty restaurants that are most in arrears.

How much else is owed by non-restaurant corporations?

Is this what Arlington's economic future is based upon? More restaurants that can't pay their taxes?

What is Arlington's Economic Development Office doing? Persuading more restaurants to locate in Arlington where the restaurants that are already here can barely scrape by?

Know what Frank O'Leary's staff is doing right now? Preparing for Frank's blow out St. Patrick's Day Party.

Why do we need more chain restaurants in Arlington? The people in Economic Development are supposed to serve the interests of Arlingtonians. Why can't Arlingtonians start small businesses, especially minority group Arlingtonians?
