School System's Focus is on Team Sports, Not Obesity Prevention

Hello, Yupette,

When is the Arlington School System going to get its act together regarding childhood and teenage obesity prevention? There is a lot of talk. The schools are supposedly serving healthier food. But the number of overweight and obese children appears to be increasing. Why all the emphasis on team sports and winning football, basketball, soccer, etc. championships? So much of our taxes goes to the school system, and we have mediocrity and more mediocrity to show for it.

I hope we will have a School Board candidate running against the incumbent next year who puts fitness over team sports.

They all talk about obesity prevention, starting with Michelle Obama. But all it is is talk.

They are afraid to take on the fast food chains.

So what if your kid gets low fat food served at school? McDonalds, Wendys, Taco Bell, etc., are just down the street from my child's school. Check out the fast food restaurants near Wakefield HS at 4 P.M. weekdays.

There are so many stupid rules and regulations in school that once school is over they just want to be kids.

Fire Patrick Murphy. He's a championship team coach wannabe. So let him.

Correction. Under Patrick Murphy's leadership the Arlington School System's focus is on CHAMPIONSHIP team sports.

I recommend that Arlington County convene a fact finding group composed of Nanny Nancy Hunt, Barbara Donnellan, Chris Zimmerman, and Scott McCaffrey to undertake a bicycle tour of Arlington's schools to determine the causes and prevention of teen and childhood obesity.

Can't do that - Scotty has his semi-annual liposuction scheduled for next year.

Ask Ron Carlee what happened to those three wheeled bicycles he bought for County Employees.

Abby Raphael? The Incumbent who's running for re-selection? Ms. Arlington Schools Mediocrity? Don't expect her to do anything. She's another Yuptard.

Libby Garvey is running for Virginia State Senate on her School Board record.

Michelle Obama did not go after fast food restaurants, by the way.

There are what, 21,400 K-12 students in Arlington's school system? Take 10% of that - 2140. That's all the school system is interested in educating, the top 10%, whether it's intellectual or what passes for physical fitness - team sports.

My opinion - sue the school system. Nothing else works.

Don't bother calling the Justice Department. Nada Tejada's counterpart in the school system is a Justice Department attorney.

Abby Raphael is an Elitist who only cares about the top 10% of Arlington's students.

Libby Garvey and Mary Hynes are largely responsible for the long-time deficiencies in the Arlington School System.

Yupette, did you hear that Fi$$ette, Zimmerman, Hynes and Favola high-fived the President's federal pay freeze announcement? Holding the line on GS salaries will advance the Board's goal of limiting occupancy in residential neighborhoods to consultants, lobbyists, lawyers and executives (oh yes, also APS Superintendents).

Fi$ette's long term goal is to gentrify the middle class and minorities out of Arlington and re-segregate Arlington into a classic upscale circa-1960 'whites only' suburb. Look who's behind him - Post, Sun Gazette, Civic Federation, REITs, law firms, Chamber of Commerce....

Focus is not on drop-out prevention either. Ask Mary Hynes, Libby Garvey, Sally Baird, and Abby Raphael.

I Don't Read the Post. Here's Why said...

If you weren't quite sure before the DC mayoral campaign that the Post is racist and elitist, there is little doubt now.

Just goes to show what stupid Yuptards the County Board are. The GS 13s who live in Arlington are still going to live in Arlington. They won't have the disposable income to spend at the Signature, Artisphere, restaurants, bars, art galleries, etc.

County Board member who increasingly dislikes the poor, working poor, and middle class is Barbara Favola.
