O'Leary's Tax Decal Competition Sends a Terrible Message To Children

Hello, Yupette,

I recently moved to Arlington County from Fairfax County, where there is no window decal to show you paid the 'car tax' on the vehicle. I am astounded that my child is being encouraged to participate in a vehicle decal design competition. This vehicle decal program wastes at least $250,000, generates tons of waste paper and plastic unnecessarily, wastes vehicle owners' time and energy, and encourages our children to participate in the design of next year's decal. Mr. O'Leary's program sends a terrible message to school children that all this waste is OK. Is there any way for me to opt out of this program?

Amy

Amy, you should talk to Mr. O'Leary's good friend, County Board Chairman Jay Fisette, who's spent this week micro-managing environmental education for our school children via the Arlington County - Dominion Resources Citizen Environmental Task Force.

I think this car tax decal program costs way more than $250,000 if you include the PR the County Manager's propaganda team is generating.

I posted several messages to the Sun Gazette blog about the total irresponsibility of O'Leary's decal program but McCaffrey never publishes anything critical of O'Leary.

Time for an Arlington Tea Party.

Arlington County Board can end the tax decal program.

Call Chairman Fisette and see what excuses he gives for not ending this wasteful program - 703-228-3130

Where the Republicans when it comes to these issues of basic fiscal responsibility? At soccer practice?

No, they're home polishing their resumes and obsequious cover letters for appointment to the Planning Commission or some other advisory group.

Thumbs down to Scott McCaffrey for promoting this egregious waste of tax dollars year after year.

I called the County board and got the run around. I think they and everyone who works for then is zoned on Zoloft.

I'm calling the School Board on Monday and telling them that I don't want our school children used in this manner.

Call former School Board member and current County Board member Mary Hynes and see if she will put an item on the agenda for the next County Board meeting to end the vehicle tax decal program and the concomitant exploitation of our children by Mr. O'Leary. Let us know how she responds.

My opinion - Mary Hynes is the worst - a 70's Partyer who made our schools into party zones and has moved on to making our residential neighborhoods into party zones.

Like Fisette, Mary Hynes is zoned on Zoloft.

Arlington County Government is so bad in so many ways it's awesome.

County Board doesn't listen about this either. Thy have been asked many times to end this wasteful program.

Yes, Buffy is correct. We have bad corrupt government. Bad government that spends tens of millions making themselves look good. That's how they get re-elected.

People get exercised over Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars.

Every week the five of them pull about a dozen Bristol Palin charades on the citizens, they have 14 people in the County Manager's Office alone who promote them and their wacky schemes with P.R. paid for by us.

Saddest part of Arlington County Government is - it's bi-partisan.

Pretty pathetic when soccer games keep the Republican candidate for County Board from attending important meetings. It's one party ruling Arlington - the Republicratic Party, or if you prefer, the Yupublicratic Party.

Log Cabin Grrl, how much do they spend every year going after awards that make them look good? Then writing press releases and e-mailing the PR to the media, which print it almost verbatim?
