How Many of Arlington's K-12 Children are Malnurished?

Hi Yupette,

Although Arlington taxpayers give the school system $452 million to educate 21,000+ children it appears that thousands of children enrolled in Arlington schools are malnourished and / or undernourished. How does a school system that seems to have a program for every student allow so many children to come to school each morning hungry? And why with the millions spent on food service does the school system serve students meals they won't eat? This has been going on for years. My daughter and her friends claim the school system serves "rabbit food". They do not eat 'junk food' and seldom consume soft drinks. All we get from the School Board are constant promises to make improvements. Why do we keep re-electing these insipid people?

It's called "institutional" food service...you know, like a prison.

There is NO excuse. Like the 32% drop out rate at Wakefield HS. We have to stop re-electing Libby Garvey and Sally Baird.

If they're not worried about ovecrowding why should they care about nutrition?

Speaking of Libby Garvey, what does she do on the School Board but a) play Democratic politics and b) keep the status quo going? Her children are long out of the school system.

The parents of many of Arlington's children had a healthy diet before they immigrated from Mexico and Central America. It was mostly vegetarian and low-fat.

I find it incredible that so many children skip breakfast or have a bowl of cereal loaded with sugar and a glass of juice also loaded with sugar. The school system forces parents into a huge amount of involvement for stuff like driver's education and field trips, but doesn't care about the basics.

LOTS of hungry children at McDonalds after school, though.

I'm a parent who's really PO'd about the amount of money being spent on "team sports". This has become a County where "physical education" is an oxymoron.. While we're voting Sally Baird out we should tell Patrick Murphy to find other employment, somewhere in the Deep South where he can run the school system and coach a championship football team. He belongs in Gainesville Florida, not Arlington Virginia.

Libby Garvey is by far the worst. Sally Baird isn't far behind. They are to the School Board what Zimmerman and Fisette are to the County Board.

Drivers Ed? You mean the ORDEAL Sally Baird forces entire families to endure for months so their 17 year old can get a driver's license?

In fact we should compare all the hoops Sally Baird makes high school students and their families jump through to get a damn driver's license vs. their no food, rabbit food, or junk food "choices" the provide for student nutrition.

Too Many. Dump Baird.

Time to tell Patrick Murphy to find other employment. Some Yupscale school system in Florida with money to burn on sports awaits his team sports craziness.
