Parents Tell Zimmerman: Stop Playing Games With Library Funding, Hours

Hi Yupette,

Dozens of parents attended today's County Board meeting and told Chris Zimmerman to stop playing games with library funding and hours.

According to Library Department employees Chris Zimmerman and other County Board members have systematically stripped funds from County library budgets for three years to fund the Artisphere and other County Board vanity projects.

Funds were taken from the library system budget and used to fund Artisphere lighting and other theatrical equipment.

If the Artisphere doesn't get some serious fund raising and philanthropy going we are going to be stuck supporting these wealthy people - forever - with funds stripped from library budgets.

The "theatrical equipment" cost almost a million dollars.

"Philanthropy" by Arlington's wealthy arts crowd is an oxymoron. Why are the wealthiest performing arts groups still collecting subsidies from Arlington County?

I would love to see Diane Kresh replaced. She did nothing but play games at the Library of Congress and she's doing the same running Arlington's library system.

OF COURSE the County Board is lukewarm to the idea of restoring and extending library hours. County Board is fully committed to supporting the Artisphere for 3 more years.

They are going to spend $600,000 for the design phase for the $5 million beaver pond restoration and for designing the public art for the Four Mile Run floodplain - items 33 and 34 on Tuesday's consent agenda. What makes you think they have any money left over for libraries?

Anyone hear Sally Baird ask her fellow Dems for more library hours and funding?

No, Sally wants more County Board funding to Rehoboth Arlington with recreation and entertainment infrastructure.

What is the "educational" component of the Four Mile Run public arts project and the Beaver Pond Envoirosphere? I don't see any.

To be determined by committees appointed by Chris Zimmerman, Jay Fisette, and Sally Baird.

The 10-10-10 Artisphere opening will cost taxpayers at least $100,000.

How about the Shared Bicycle give-away to one of the County Board's pet people> Another $800,000.
