Traffic Sign Funds Going to Bicycle Signs - Markings

Hi Yupette,

In case you wondered why street center lines haven't been repainted, crosswalks haven't been repainted, and Speed Limit and Stop signs haven't been maintained and upgraded it's because the money is going to paint bicycle lane markings on streets and post signs stating that bicycles can use vehicle lanes.

This is another attempt by the County Board to inflict its pet special interests on everyone. Puleeze don't tell me I have to start riding a bicycle in traffic, which is obviously Fisette's next move - exclusive lanes for bicycles only and prohibitions on motor vehicles. This is the same gang that approves 400 new parking spaces under every large building.

Fisettte is becoming a wacko about bicycles. I refuse to ride a bicycle anywhere but on a bicycle trail, and then only when the Lance Armstrong wannabees aren't out racing.

Don't forget Guru of Gridlock Zimmerman. He goes right along with this Yuptard stuff.

Wacko? How about the street lane "sharrows" on Walter Reed between Four Mile Run and the county line when there is a parallal center-lined, off-street bike path?

The "sharrows" skip Chris Zimmerman's neighborhood and then pick up again after Glebe Rd -- way to go Guru of Gridlock protecting your neighbors and pals.

Lance Armstrong Wannabees. Another Jay Fi$$ette Yuptard special interest group. Same Yuptards bikers who run stop signs, run traffic lights, weave in and out of traffic, speed on bike lanes, and wear black clothing. And scare the hell out of drivers by their recklessness.

Know what the Lance Armstrong Yuptard Wannabees are called elsewhere - Ninja Bikers. They ruined the bike trails for me and my family. Another special interest group Fi$$ette throws money at.

Do the math - 3,000 (on average) new parking spaces under new buildings per year for ten years. Then they want everyone to ride a bicycle. Duh.

FYI, County Board awarded a no bid bicycle sharing franchise to their ACDC good buddy Charlie Denney at the last, aka "Christmas in July", County Board meeting.

Meanwhile, the County has no comprehensive bicycle safety program and no one enforces traffic laws when bicyclists drive recklessly, DWI, DUI, etc.

Notice there are no alternative transportation options mentioned by the County's PR propaganda team except for trolleys, bicycles, and Metro?

Did you know it costs $12 and takes 20 minutes to ride a cab to Arlington from Union Station weekends and non-rush hours? No one who bills by the hour rides Metro.

Secret Zimmerman/FiSSette plan is to close down Columbia Pike to cars, open to trolley folly and bikes only, announcement to come after state turns over control of the Pike to Arlington County.

Another storm coming, Lances and Lancettes will be huddling under overpasses tonight just like this morning. Without cars there'd be no underpasses where they could hide.

County Board Members' neighborhoods are protected against Ninja Bikers by extensive networks of speed tables. Check out Zimmy's neighborhood.

Re Bicycle traffic law enforcement - Arlington Police Department is on strike and has been for several years. Will only respond to 911 and non-emergency complaints called in to 558-2222. And attend community events they're ordered to attend, like the County Fair.

Even the backpackers and grandparents visiting their kids are taking taxis to Arlington from Union Station.

Just heard on my scanner that a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle on Walter Reed Drive. It's 8:20 PM and almost dark, has been raining for an hour. What are people doing riding bicycles at night on major arterials in this weather?

Tom J. said...

I heard that too. Hope the person wasn't seriously hurt.

Jay and Chris will send a sympathy card....

The "sharrows" embolden bike riders to act like they are cars. God speed and prayers to the injured cyclist.

Next step, of course, is to remove dangerous motor vehicles from streets and roads, starting with major arterials like Walter Reed Drive. Same Walter Reed Drive that is becoming choked with traffic because of the massive parking garages that Fisette, Zimmerman, and Nanny Nancy Hunt had constructed in Shirlington Village.

You will almost never see a Lance Armstrong Wannabee wearing a lime green shirt or vest or bright colored bicycle clothing while riding.

Did you know that there are approximately 140 reported bicycle and pedestrian injuries in Arlington every year? Buried in the County's annual budget. Does not count injuries where someone hits a pothole and falls off the bike and later drives himself to the hospital.

The developers do not want to construct 1.5 parking spaces per residential unit under a 200 unit luxury condo building.. The County Board requires them to do that.

Nanny Nancy was a big booster of the County Board's no bid give-away bicycle franchise to Charlie Denney at the last CB meeting.

Can you imagine Nanny Nancy riding down Walter Reed Drive (where she lives) on a bicycle?

Yes, when pigs fly.

If Fisette, Zimmerman, etc., like Portland Oregon so much they should move there. They should be prepared for - high unemployment, increasing crime, traffic that's almost as bad as here, mediocre schools, high prices, terrible weather.

Why don't the Nanny Editors do something that's useful - like start a comprehensive bicycle, pedestrian, motor vehicle safety program? I, for one, am tired of the newspapers always telling us we have to do this and do that. Editors like McCaffrey and Benton are bad enough. The Post is terrible with it's 'Gotcha' journalism. Post is paranoid about guns, guns. guns. Well guns aren't getting 140 pedestrians and cyclists hurt on Arlington's streets every year.

When I was a kid growing up near Philadelphia the newspapers sponsored all sort of community activities. All the journalists and columnists want to do now is tell us how we should live our lives.

As was mentioned before, Post is a profit center for Berkshire-Hathaway. Sun Gazette is a profit center for GE. Nick Moran Benton is busy boosting his pet special interests.

Worst, by far, are the skateboarders. Dressed in black clothing and reckless behavior is the norm. Like skateboarding down a hill on a poorly-lighted residential street at 10 PM.

Yeah, I yelled at a skateboarder the other day. Told him he was going to be an organ transplant donor if he didn't stop skateboarding down the street after dark.

The people behind "neighborhood traffic calming" in Arlington are racists and elitists. My neighborhood placed "Keep Kids Alive - Drive 25" signs around the neighborhood a few years ago. That slowed down traffic. But slowing down traffic is not what "neighborhood traffic calming" is about. It's about keeping non-residents out of upscale neighborhoods.

Anonymous said...

A few years ago the County gave "Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25" signs to neighborhoods. They worked. So the County's transportation bureaucracy felt threatened and stopped passing out $10 signs and began constructing $10,000 speed tables.

I am a biker and support biking, but realistically autos are the primary means of transport in Arlington.

I don't understand why the county took out parking spots on N. Quincy Street near Central Library and put in a bike lane. It is actually safer for a biker to have a lane of parked vehicles.

Also, the county is too aggressively enforcing parking fines--$35 for over staying a meter.

I do not see why parking meters on Saturdays should be enforced.
