Arlington Street Re-Paving Will Cost More Than $100 Million

Hey, Yupette,

I saw the County Board put $14 million for street paving on this year's bond referendum. The $14 million will only repave Wilson Blvd., Clarendon Blvd., and Washington Blvd. It's really expensive to repave boulevards, up to $500,000 per mile. It's going to cost at least $100 million to put Arlington's streets and roads back into good shape.

Yes, and it will also cost at least $200 million to modernize Arlington's storm sewer system.

County doesn't have $300 million for street paving and storm sewer system modernization - $150 million is being dedicated to Zimmerman's TrolleySphere and another $150 million to Fisette's AquaSphere.

Yupette, thank you for showing some concern for Harley Riders. I hit a pot hole on Washington Blvd. and almost lost control last Saturday.

Yupette, we really need a thread about the County Board's Traffic Calming taxpayer rip off. That is, the Speed Limit signs and Stop signs get obscured by foliage and there is no police enforcement of the speed limits and stopping for stop signs and then the Yuptards who want the County to spend millions for speed tables, islands, and street narrowing get the Yuppie Mommies all hysterical about speeding in the neighborhood.

Did someone mention Washington Blvd.? Take a look at Washington Blvd. in Westover Village. Not only is the pavement crumbling but the "brick" traffic calming crosswalks are disintegrating.

As for Fisette's AquaSphere have you noticed that the people who are complaining the most about the "need" for this vanity project are the people who belong to Elitist pool clubs?

AquaSphere will be run by and for friends of Jay and Bob.

The asphalt speed tables are starting to disintegrate.

Who are the members of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee?

Kevin Sweeney is the Chairman of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee aka Neighborhood Troublemakers. Hard to find a list of current members. Jeffrey Sikes is the staff coordinator.

Arlington County is crazy. Ignores basic street paving in favor of expensive 'traffic calming' that has to be repaired/replaced after five years. The 'traffic calming' is 'necessary' because the police seldom enforce speed limits and the speed limit signs are overgrown by tree branches.

Then a bunch of County Board appointed Nanny Nancys and do-nothing County Staff get residential neighborhoods riled up about the speed limits being violated so as to get $250,000-and-up worth of 'traffic calming' installed in the neighborhoods. The 'traffic calming' lasts five years before it has to be repaired or replaced.

When the neighborhood Adults object the Yuppie Chairman of the County Board tells them to "get over it".

Does anyone know how much it will cost to replace the orange brick-textured asphalt crosswalks? They seem to be disintegrating everywhere they have been installed.

Thank you for this blog. There is always money in the County's budget for expansive recreation and entertainment and other vanity projects but never money to maintain and upgrade basic infrastructure.

The old mercury vapor street lamps on my street are about out and I've called the County 5 times to have them replaced and the last time I was told - there's no money in the budget.

Speaking of replacing basic infrastructure why do we put up with the corrupt neighborhood conservation program whereby neighborhoods like Favola's get $400,000 basketball courts while Tom's neighborhood can't get the old street lamps replaced?

Because the people who oppose the Republicrats are too busy to speak out at County Board meetings when the vanity projects come up for approval.

Corrupt? LOL! If the political opposition starts speaking out against the vanity projects they won't get $1 million dollar lighted all-weather soccer fields for their kids.

Fi$$ette won't upgrade and install more Speed Limit traffic signs along Pershing Drive because he promised his neighbors he would install traffic calming to reduce speeding.

How's that for fiscal irresponsibility? Chairman of the County Board would rather spend $400,000 on traffic calming than spend $4,000 on new traffic signs.

McCaffrey won't print anything or publish anything in this Sun Gazette blogs criticizing Fi$$ette. What a jive turkey.

McCaffrey is just a chamber of commerce realtor county booster. The streets in his own neighborhood are crumbling and he won't say nothing. Runs his mouth about everything else like his latest nightmare.

Yeah, like whether Jeff Davis Highway should be renamed :-{ We need a new local newspaper in Arlington.

Traffic Calming isn't about speeding, it's to keep vehicles out of neighborhoods. Anyone who tells you different is lying.

Yes, and if you want proof, look at Zimmerman's neighborhood in Douglas Park.

Can we have a thread about the disparity between North Arlington (north of I-66) and South Arlington regarding street paving?
