County Board's "Christmas in July" Agenda Includes Heavily Arming Arlington Police and Deputies

Hello Yupette,

I read the County Board's "Christmas in July" agenda for the July 10th meeting and was appalled to see they are using law enforcement grants from the Justice Department to heavily arm the police and sheriff's deputies. This in a county that in the last 6 months has had 2 unsolved murders and 2 incidents where homeless persons died after altercations with the Arlington police, none of these persons was armed. Why do the police have to carry even more powerful handguns than they already carry? Why do sheriff's deputies have to carry assault rifles? What is going on in this County?

Are they preparing for Rolling Thunder 2011?

Boss Zimmerman is PO'd that 384 citizens showed up to protest his Arlington Mill redevelopment scam which called for them to sacrifice their local library and (surprise) he's using the police to show the Arlington sheeple that he's still Boss.

Same Chris Zimmerman who a few years ago tried to get hunting and shooting magazines banned from local convenience stores?

Same police department that had to obtain private funding for training police officers in handling homeless people who are off their meds? After two such homeless persons died during altercations with Arlington police.

Sheriff's Deputies have to be prepared when evicting 70-somethings who can't pay their real estate taxes.

"Christmas in July" is exactly right - the County Board's pet people are lined up to receive more tax dollars for more pet programs.

Looks like Special Agent Wannabe Antonelli is scaring his buds in Arlington law enforcement with more rumors about 'local terrorists'.

There is ZERO pro-active policing in Arlington County. Unless you define "pro-active" as showing up at civic association meetings are listening to gossip.

We are already spending a fortune on Homeland security and SWAT teams.

Arlington police received a grant for a $250,000 armored vehicle last County Board meeting.

Hi Yupette. Can we have a thread about the upcoming "Christmas in July" County Board meeting and all the $$$$$ the County Board that was so fiscally challenged six months ago is going to hand out to its favorite people in return for their votes?

What are we, a suburb of Mexico City? What next, armored HumVees with machine guns and grenade launchers mounted on top?

Arlington PD can barely cope with Arlington's population growth. Same for fire and ems. Arlington PD should be applying for community policing grants.

Does anyone know how much Arlington pays to settle 'excessive use of force' litigation?

How many months did Chris Zimmerman spend waging war against Guns and Ammo and The American Rifleman being sold at supermarkets and convenience stores? Didn't he get them to stop selling hunting and shooting magazines for awhile?

Sheriff Beth Arthur does not carry a handgun on-duty, by the way. She doesn't want to scare her fellow Socialists. Of course, she may carry a 'back up' handgun concealed among her 'assets'.

Arlington Sheriff's Department? It's claim to fame is running a jail that is close to bedlam, evicting tenants as the result of gentrification in-fill, and setting up speed traps at the bottom of steep hills (e.g., George Mason Drive near Four Mile Run).

Some national or international human rights group should look at the way the homeless are treated by Arlington County. The worst-behaved dog that is rescued by the Animal Welfare League is treated better than any homeless human in Arlington.

Well, what did you expect after 30 years of Reagan Yuppieism?

We don't have to worry about "terrorists". We do have to worry about inside-the-beltway becoming a huge Yuppie party zone fueled by massive quantities of alcohol and drugs.
