County Board Will Increase Open Space Via Tear-Downs

Hi Yupette,

Check out the last item on the County Board's published agenda last night - the purchase and tear-down of a commercial property in Nauck to create open space. Based on the County Board's comments it's obvious that's the way they'll go to create open space in the future.

That is so progressive, just like they are doing it in Detroit!

How much are these tear-downs costing taxpayers?

Joan said...

Well, there are the tax dollars required to buy the commercial property and there are the tax dollars that are lost because the County no longer collects sales tax, personal property tax, real estate tax, and business tax on the commercial property.

It's like the County goes from collecting $15,000 per year in taxes to the County having to pay maybe $500 a year to maintain the open space.

County Board last night absolutely indicated it wants to crate more open space through tear-downs,

I hope East Falls Church residents saw the County Board's comments regarding acquiring open space via tear-downs.

There is a lot on South 16th Street in Douglas Park that's a good tear down target, whad'ya think?

Yupette the County has purchased a property for open space in each of the past 3 County Board meetings.

This answers the question: why is my pothole-filled street not scheduled for repaving until 2027.

If any homes in Douglas Park are going to be torn down by the County Board it will be the small affordable homes near Walter Reed Drive.

How much would each tear-down of a $650,000 affordable single family home cost taxpayers?

BTW, the County Board claimed six months ago that the County was so financially stressed that major cut backs would be required and then implemented major cuts in services.

Cost to taxpayers would be the loss of one affordable home + $650,000 + $5622.50 (this year) in real estate taxes + whatever the people were paying in other taxes + whatever it costs to maintain the open space created from the tear-down.

Must be noted that if the people living in the home have school age children each student in Arlington costs taxpayers about $20,000 per year to educate.

County Board wants Arlington to be populated by upscale singles and wealthy families living in McMansions and expensive condos. The small 3-bedroom 2-bath home that Joan Senior Citizen has lived in for 40 years is a nuisance and an impediment to the County Board's gentrification redevelopment agenda.

What is especially fascinating about this tear down is that it is a business that survived for decades, right through the era of when Green Valley was the largest open air drug market in Northern Virginia. This is what community in Arlington is all about -- buying out the long-time survivors so condofication can proceed apace.

Owner of this store is moving into another building close by.

County Board never cared Nauck until the African American community was gentrified out.

Want to move to a neighborhood where homes won't be torn down for condos? Look at neighborhoods where McMansions are being constructed and there are no condos.

Time to say no more large scale development for the sake of development.

I put most of the blame on the media - all they care about is more ad revenue. They took a ton of money from BP for public relations ads, and surprise, did not print a word attacking BP for the Gulf oil spill.

Worst is when they slam neighbors who are anti-development and a couple years later print big real estate ads for new condos in that neighborhood.

Let's Be Free said...

Yes, blame on the media. That's the Sun Gazette scam. Corporate gets half or more of its ad revenue from real estate and development interests. Scott McCondory get extra $$$s for writing real estate copy for weekly features and seasonal supplements. It's a racket.

Check out what the Sun Gazette and FC News Press said about EFC re-development - they can't wait for massive condoization to happen.

McCaffrey is on the board of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Sun Gazette is owned by General Electric. Arlington Chamber of Commerce has a delegation in China to develop ways of outsourcing American IT jobs that don't require a security clearance. GE just outsourced more jobs from it's lighting division to China. McCaffrey is a weasel who is constantly preaching to everyone about how we should lead our lives and how everything everyone else does is in some way screwed up. What a Yuptard.

Barbara Favola was adamant about tear downs, she wants lots more of them.

We should hold a "Rally Against Tear-Downs" in Douglas Park. The entire Arlington Police Department would turn out for the event.

McCaffrey is a minor media figure in Arlington compared to Benton in FC.

Nick "Moran" Benton never saw a 50 year old structure in FC that he didn't want torn down and redeveloped.

The school system is getting in on the gig.

Former schools superintendent Smith had summer chats scheduled at parent homes throughout the County in July and August. The new, I don't like kids enough to actually have any of my own, Superintendent Murphy is having his first chat Thursday night sponsored and hosted by the Rosslyn Business Improvement District.

Looking forward to elementary school development projects. I'd hate to see developable public land go to waste.

How about a thread?

Nice to see APS is getting its priorities right.

What would the Republicans do if they controlled the County Board?

This County S U C K S. There is no fund raising and zero philanthropy, except for a few nickel and dime efforts that collect nickels and dimes.

Bring some people into this County who will not bulldoze every $650,000 single family home into eight condos or two 6,000 sq foot McMansions on a 5,000 sq foot lot.

Murphy's undergraduate degree was in phys ed.

He was all for more for trailer classrooms when he worked in Fairfax County.

He's like Mike Brown, another outsider who will rubber stamp the County Board's condo-ization program.

Notice McCaffrey's blog? All he writes about is real estate, real estate, real estate. I am tempted to call a couple of his advertisers telling them that McCaffrey is such a jerk that I just toss his newspaper into the recycling bin without reading it. I look at his blog once in awhile, it's all about Scott amd his favorite interests.

If McCaffrey doesn't like being called a Realtor he should surrender his Virginia real estate license.

Smitty McCaffrey a Realtor? No, he's a Boy Scout trying to earn his Real Estate Merit Badge.

Smitty should tell his readers what deals the delegation from the Arlington Chamber of Commerce reached with the Chinese Communists regarding outsourcing NoVa IT jobs that don't require a security clearance.
