Guest Thread: Planning for New Wakefield H.S. Will Start Soon

Hi Yupette,

Please be aware that planning for a new Wakefield High School will start soon. So if you have children who will attend Wakefield you should be involved. Don't leave the decision-making to the politicians. Our kids deserve better than educational decisions made on the basis of local politics by political parties.

Wakefield may have a 33% drop out rate but you can be assured that the new H.S. will have America's finest swimming pool and soccer fields.

When will the planning meetings be announced? Do parents get to have input or only the school board's and county board's pet people?

Called the School Board office. They don't know about any future meetings.

Ask at the Civ Fed meeting tonight.

Yupette, Wakefield HS planning is going to the Planning Commission on January 13th as an informational item.

I do not want another Washington-Lee where the focus is on sports.

The County Board and School Board brought in another of their fellow Rockefeller Republican bureaucrats to design the school from dysfunctional New York State.

Anon., I agree, Wakefield will have a Jay Fisette - designed aquatic center and Walter Tejada - designed soccer fields.

Speaking of aquatics centers, why is it that all I ever hear about the new W-L is "Aquatics Center"?

Have you seen what the new school superintendant (Patrick "Relocatable" Murphy) is up to? Turning Arlington's schools into clones of the Fairfax County school "system".

Parent, if Fairfax County's schools are so great, why do so many Fairfax County residents illegally send their kids to Arlington Schools?

What the hell will Wakefield be? Another Columbine?

School system has held informational meetings about Wakefield for a few neighborhoods.

This is an upscale community center with classrooms. Don't we already have enough community centers? County Board just approved $25 million for another.

Yep, sure looks like a 21st Century Columbine to me. Cheerleaders vs. the Nerds. Minorities don't count.

Thanks for posting this thread. No one in Fairlington knows anything about the architects' plans, let alone about the plans going to the Planning Commission on January 13th.

What do you expect from a corrupt civic association that's a pawn of County Government?

There aren't enough classrooms in the proposed building for a projected school population of 25,000 within 10 years.

Basic decisions were made at least 18 months ago by your elected officials. Parents and citizens get to choose the color of the floor tile.

I oppose the plans for Wakefield because the focus is on the school as a recreation, sports, and community center, also because the building will not have enough classrooms for the projected increase in Arlington's school enrollment. But I have a kid in the school system and am afraid to say anything. The County Board's and School Board's pet people approved the plans, chaired the committees, etc. Yes there were meetings, but they rubberstanped the County Board and School Board plans.

Did anyone mention traffic? From BRAC office construction and a redeveloped King Street.

How many non-residents will be in and out of the Jay Fisette South Arlington Recreation and Sports Center every day?

The new Wakefield HS will also include the Jay Fisette live theater.

I was going to attend tonight's Planning Commission meeting but only the Nanny Nancys on the Planning Commission and County Staff who live outside Arlington get to speak.

Don't worry there is no money for this
