Fisette's Agenda for 2010 - More "Green Gimmicks"

Did anyone hear the words "renewable energy" during the County Board's organizational meeting today? Why weren't any Arlington Green Party members appointed to Fisette's environmental taskforce? Does Jay Fisette really expect Arlingtonians to commute to work by bicycle over Arlington's pot holed and poorly lighted streets and roads?

I live in Fairlington, about 1/4 mile from Sun Gazette Editor Scott McCaffrey, who is a big Fisette booster. Do these guys really expect me to ride a bicycle to commute to work over the broken pavemen in my neighborhood? Also, i am 53 years old and I would have to commute up and down a 200 foot hill. I don't think so.

Time for Arlingtonians to DEMAND that Fisette, Tejada, Zimmerman, and Favola announce they are retiring from the County Board after their current terms.

We really need a regional daily and local weekly newspaper to compete with status quo booster media like the Post and Sun Gazette.

In light of the County's streets still not being completely plowed in all residential neighborhoods, Fisette's call for Arlingtonians to commute everywhere via bicycle was idiotic.

Environmental activists have been telling Jay Fisette for years to replace old mercury vapor street lights, as soon as possible. But I see the County Board meeting room is still lighted by incandescent flood lights, so Jay can't even do that.

Start a neighborhood ride sharing program. Start a shuttle bus program to and from shopping plazas and malls. Start ferry service to the DC waterfront from Alexandria, Occuquan, Belvoir, Indian Head, etc. Start everyone who works in an office telecommuting one day a week. Scrap the Pike trolley and public art and start installing renewable energy on public buildings.

Anyone know who I would write to complain about the Sun Gazette Editor's boosterism for the irresponsible County Board? McCaffrey doesn't publish or acknowledge critical comments.

Stared a shared taxi system whereby 3 or 4 people can share a cab for a few dollars each.

Jay Fisette's call for everyone to start commuting by bicycle is a slap in the face to Arlington residents. Fisette was instrumental in creating a traffic mess and used funds meant to pave streets for his pet arts projects. So he wants everyone to commute by bicycle over crumbling streets? Duh. Fisette should not be on the County Board. He should be a lobbyist for his arts and recreation interests.

Use federal stimulus funds (if any more are forthcoming) to put renewable energy, triple paned windows, and insulation into Arlington's public buildings.

Post reporters are as bad or worse. Last "story" by Annie Gowen involved the children of struggling immigrants not being able to afford personal computers - at a time when local thrift stores are selling complete XP systems in excellent condition for $15.

We need a new Congressman who will get federal tax credits to homeowners for serious and expensive energy efficiency upgrades that will save homeowners a lot of money and prevent a lot of fossil fuel from being burned.

County Board appointed its pet ward heelers to the green ribbon panel and ignored every other environmental activist. What a bunch of turkeys.

Make the f-ing developers make the buildings they construct energy efficient - meaning 3-pane windows and a lot of insulation and solar on the roof. Stop using that f-ing LEED charade system.

Replace the County's mercury vapor street lights ASAP. The older they get the less light they produce the more energy they consume.

Well, Anon. what did you expect from corrupt pols and corrupt local media?

Anonymous said...

Also, don't replace the mercury vapor street lights with new street lights that put more light above the street than on the street.

County just spent $460,000 on a public art project, 25 million on a park, another 25 million on a community center. No money to replace energy guzzling street lights. Sorry.

It's 5 PM. It's 25 degrees. The wind is blowing 25 mph. Sure, Jay, I'll hop on my mountain bike and cruise right over to the health club. And after that I'll ride to the supermarket and buy some groceries. Then I'll ride to Shirlington and have a double latte and ride home.

My brother is an aerospace engineer. He took a close look at the $460,000 kinetic wind sculpture to be constructed in Longbridge Park displayed at the last county board meeting and remarked: "I hope that thing was wind tunnel tested."

Meaning, what happens when a 60 mph wind gust hits it?

If it's destroyed by a 60 mph wind gust the CB will appropriate $560,000 for a new and improved version.

Fund interurban (express and local) rail to Richmond, Charlottesville, VA Beach.

Won't happen soon. Wacky Bob McDonnell wants everyone to drive, drive, drive.

I want the police department to start a comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle safety program. Crime is down, they have the resources.

For what the County pays for PR (14 people doing PR in the County Manager's office alone) the County could have installed solar heating on every public building in the County.

McDonnell is going to massively cut the budgets of state agencies and force everyone to drive even more than we do now.

There are between 20 and 30 people employed by Arlington County who put out PR for County Government.

Note that Scott McCaffrey, Editor of the Sun Gazette, is a board member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, which OPPOSES renewable energy, unlike the U.S. Chamber of Commerce which ENDORSES renewable energy.

I have not seen anything recently in the Washington Post about renewable energy (solar) installed on buildings.

Bob McDonnell and other Republicans hate AMTRAK and interurban rail and their "transportation agenda" consists of everyone driving or flying everywhere.

McDonnell wants the road system in NoVa to be like VA Beach - 10 lane interstates bumper-to-bumper at 70 mph.

It's all part of the same old same old Yuppieism that's been in place for 30 years.

The Green Party wrote to Fisette asking for inclusion on the environmental committee, so far no response.
