HOT Lanes Charade - Bad for Transportation, Bad for the Environment, Bad for Virginia's Taxpayers?

HOT Lanes are a hot topic in Northern Virginia. Here's an opportunity for you to weigh in.

HOT Lanes are a Lose-Lose-Lose situation. What a horrible concept.

The Virginia Pols who voted for this turkey had to return $178,000 in campaign contributions from the Aussie corporation that's funding it. So getting approval from the General Assembly cost the Aussies nothing. How's that for a steal?

Bad Bad deal for the environment. HOT lanes will be run like a HMO runs a hospital. The execs and stockholders have to get paid first. Meaning: the more traffic the more income the more profits.

Scrap the HOT Lanes. Use the infrastructure funding the Obama Administration plans to appropriate instead for a comprehensive integrated transit system.

Taxpayers lose big. Public infrastructure is sold to a for-profit corporation. Taxpayers now will have to pay to use the HOV lanes they already paid to build and maintain. This is nothing but a big giveaway to a couple of greedy corporations who paid off the pols to the tune of $178,000 in campaign contributions.

There will be massive development of affordable housing at the southern end of the I-95 HOT lanes. Traffic from this area will be funneled to I-395 and through Arlington and into DC. Maybe as many as 100,000 more vehicles per day. This is what happens when the Yuppie Elitists banish affordable housing from inside the Beltway.

Blame Tim Kaine. He is all for more interstate highways everywhere in Virginia. Also for more coal fired power plants and for more huge transmission towers taking the power from the coal fired power plants to the Yupscale suburbs.

HOT lanes will cause regressive taxation on the middle class and working poor who are being gentrified out of inside the 495 Beltway and must commute 40 miles and more to work every day.

Agreed, the middle class that's being gentrified out of Arlington to Spotsylvania will either have to spend $100 a week to use the HOT lanes or endure stop and go traffic on the regular lanes. Many workers simply can't carpool when they commute to work, they have to be at work on-time every day at some out-of-the way location.

An Australian corporation will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Thank you Governor Kaine.

HOT Lanes are racist and elitist. Another tool of the wealthy elite to gentrify minorities and other 'undesirables' out of Yuppie Elite enclaves and into rural areas where thousands of acres of highly productive agricultural land are being bulldozed to construct cheap housing.

Thank You Governor Kaine.

Tim Kaine doesn't get to run for Governor again. He gets to be Chairman of the YuppieCratic National Committee.

Even the Coalition for Smarter Growth has come around to being for building affordable housing in metro areas, not 60 miles away in rural areas.

Middle Class voters who are being squeezed out get to vote to dump "Gentrification Jay" Fisette this year.

Hi Yupette,

Check out what is going on in Falls Church. The Elitists are stonewalling the construction of high-quality affordable housing in downtown FC and want the middle class to drive in to work in trendy FC on I-66 and the Beltway.

Adrian Fenty is worse - an African-American who is gentrifying African-Americans out of the District as fast as he can.

RE Fenty - Seen SE DC near the stadium lately? Fenty is Mayor Gentrification.

All local elected officials suck. All they care about is enriching the local yupscale developers and local auto dealers.

The yuppie pols want a yuppie party zone inside the DC Beltway and anyone who does not earn over $150,000 a year living 50 miles outside the DC beltway.

Hi Yupette

How about a thread about the helicopters that buzz us constantly?

The Coalition for Smarter Growth finally realized that building upscale housing in metro corridors has become an anti-environment neo segregation charade and is speaking out. Too late.

I HATE HOT lanes. Being totally facilitated by everyone, politicians, media, civic associations. Who cares about MY quality of life? Where is the Sierra Club. Greenpeace, the Green Party, the pro-rail Independent Greens?

Does anyone but AY care that HOT lanes will bring 50,000 more vehicles into Arlington County every weekday, many from the Richmond suburbs?

Arlington Green Party? LOL. Green as in: Moran for Congress, Warner for Senate, Kaine for Governor.

Biggest winner from HOT Lanes? Tim Kaine and his law firm who will represent the mega-developers in Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, etc., counties next year when Tim is no longer Governor.

Yupette, could you say something about the HOT lanes fiasco in Delaware? A traffic disaster and total environmental devastation too.
